First thing I noticed was the new, purposeful color background to my workspace bar, which was formerly the same color as the rest of the window background, blended in seamessly, and was JUST FINE the way it was. I mean, I never gave it a single thought until today. I said to myself, "Well, that's a choice", but I plodded on.

1792873034315.webp

Next thing, my tab highlight color is now BRIGHT RED. Are you kidding me? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. No, Microsoft is not.

1792873106707.webp

And of course, an ongoing issue remains, the huge flyout infolabels that can't be suppressed and flit back and forth between the left edge of the vertical tabs pane and the right edge, sometimes appearing simultaneously with the traditional small tooltips. This isn't useful. This is distracting and stress-inducing when you move over the tabs at normal speed, as I do toward the end of the video.

Does Microsoft have a department whose mission statement is, "What can we do to make things worse this week?" Because garbage like this makes me really curious.

I've been through Edge://flags and Settings and found nothing that affects any of this. I restarted Edge, and that didn't help. Any suggestions?

I upgraded to .42 yesterday, and didn't see any changes.

I'd try rolling back to a previous System Restore point.

Failng that, download the .MSI of the version you previously ran.

Then, run the following in an elevated Command prompt...

msiexec /I Path\FileName.msi /qn ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1

I'd suggest either creating a Group Policy setting, or a Defender Firewall rule to block automatic Edge updates.

It all survives a reboot, too. Switching to light mode in Edge darkens the red tabs and workspace bar background. This all seems very deliberate.

Create a second edge profile just to see if the red tab still shows. If not it’s probably tied to an extension or theme you have installed.

The flyout should be controlled by Tab Hover Cards in settings

"Show tab preview on hover" is off. I turned that off a long time ago when I investigated a way to stop the distracting nonsense recorded in my video. It doesn't help. I didn't find anything else that did. The other stuff is new, as in, today, when Edge proudly announced its new release version to me. The only extension I run is uBlock Origin LIght.

I've used Edge for more than five years. I have the latest upgrade, and I don't see what you're seeing.

Microsoft Edge is up to date.

It looks like that as you have gone to New Tab cog > Customise Edge, amongst other selections, or ignored the new features run thru and let it change stuff.

Nothing changed on mine.

When I right-click on one of the pinned Workspace icons and choose Edit Workspace, I get the expected dialog box:

1792884966553.webp

Changing to different themes changes colors, but the dark gray one in the upper left gives me this blue background in my OP and presumably the red selection bar in the vertical tabs. It is NOT behaving like it was before the automatic update I woke up to today. I might try quitting Edge, deleting my profile, and restoring from the system image I made yesterday. It would seem the update corrupted some things, and maybe it's confined to my profile.

ETA: Haven't restored from image yet, but that bright red selection bar is in every workspace theme.

ETA2: The pinned tab icons also get the bright red treatment when hovered on, but the Favorites icons (not shown in my screenshots) do not.

Oh for goodness sakes. My other profile which doesn't use workspaces had turned blue, too, and I found this in Edge settings. Switching it back to the gray at the far left seems to have restored normalcy. Here's the kicker: It's NOT present in my main profile Settings!

No, my main profile, the one that uses workspaces extensively, gets this trash in Settings, with no way to adjust except for the workspace-specific theme dialog I posted two messages back, and that one's BROKEN as I described. I don't have high hopes for restoring the profile from an image.

LOL. I used Firefox from like 2002 until a few years ago when I moved to Edge. It was vertical tabs that made me switch, and even though Firefox has them now, it still doesn't have workspaces like Edge AFAIK. Workspaces have been a big help to me, and I recently discovered the ability to pin workspaces and open them in the same window (edge://flags to enable); this is another gamechanger for me. It really is a brilliant feature, and I'm quite upset Microsoft has already screwed it up.

That said, I do keep Firefox installed, and it auto-updated today, too. When I rebooted to see if that would help Edge, Firefox surprised me by auto-starting with Windows, and I found through autoruns that it had spontaneously added itself to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. This ridiculous, malignant behavior by Mozilla is a known issue, e.g. the post from /u/ahamling27 in this thread:

In addition, there's a longstanding bug I notice now and then in Event Viewer, "A new BITS job could not be created", ID 16398, and when I run "bitsadmin /list /allusers", it's always 60 lines of MozillaUpdate. I had to clear it again just a few weeks ago with "bitsadmin /reset /allusers".

The one thing I do miss from Firefox is Ctrl+Tab to switch between the two most recent tabs. Edge's Ctrl+Shift+A to open Tab search sort of helps, but it's just not as convenient.

ETA: For the life of me, I can't figure out how to post a plain link to reddit without the forum software turning my URL into a MEDIA tag. I've tried multiple edits, and I'm just defeated now.

paste it as code or a link and add a . to the beginning of it

as for the theme issue, try installing a theme from the webstore and then see if you can change it to default like the other profile

Why not just delete the workspace you don't like instead of getting all bent out of shape about it..
If you use workspaces, the way I understand it is you can delete any workspace at any time. I can not test this theory since
I'm a KISS kinda gal and have no need for workspaces in my life.. So I kicked that feature to the curb using Brink's totorial..

Per MS under "Frequently Asked Questions" Microsoft Edge Workspaces | Organize Browser Tabs by Project
  • How do I delete a workspace?

  • Select the workspaces menu (icon) in the top corner of your browser window, select More options (icon) next to the workspace, then select Delete workspace and confirm Delete.

Why not keep silent instead of opining on something you don't use and have no knowledge of and being rudely dismissive of someone who cares about something you don't? Given the detail of my posts, don't you think I would have said something if (a) all workspaces weren't affected, and you can count 7 pinned ones in the screenshots, or (b) new ones weren't affected? As for your suggestion, it amounts to "Got a problem? Reinstall Windows!" and "It hurts when I move my arm like this. Well don't move your arm like that!" It's not helpful, and you need to hear that.
