Solved SSD much slower on one computer than others

I have a Samsung T7 SSD 1TB that reproducibly reads at 960 Mbs on one computer and 40 on another. Any suggestions what might be the cause of this?

This is a USB connected drive. 40MB/sec is the limit of USB 2.0, are you connected to a USB 2.0 port or a USB 3 port?

Well that woud certainly fit nicely. What's a good way for me to distinguish between USB 2 and 3 (other than the blue color)?

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Just to first clarify, does the image below resemble your computer?

They correspond with the Model number you have provided:
HP Product 6V9T7AV = HP ENVY Desktop PC TE01-4000i

It would appear that the 4 USB inputs on the back are USB 2, there appears to be no USB 3 inputs on the back. Which seems rediculous.

Regarding your BIOS issues.

Your post at HP, perhaps the BIOS update isn’t trying to unpack on the USB, perhaps it’s trying to unpack on one of the C Drive partitions. I really don’t know.

The Samsung T7 has a USB Type-C port on one end. It's a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s). You will get the fastest speed from it if you connect it to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port on the computer.

Note you can't always tell what the speed is for a USB-A or USB-C port by looking at it. You might have to look at the specs.

I tested an external SSD with my other laptop. The laptop has USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 ports.
Note I had to switch out the USB-C to USB-A cable for the enclosure. With the original cable plugged into a USB 3.0 port I was only getting USB 2.0 speeds. When I used a different cable I got the expected speeds.

TThe 4 USB-2 on the back is by design mate.

That cable is too short, the SSD would be hanging from the PC 😃
This cables are great for laptops, no so good for desktops

Type-C just like Type-A ones can be either 5Gbps or 10Gbps. It looks like for the OPs computer two of the Type-A ports are 10Gbps.

BTW, for my desktop only two of its ports are 10Gbps ports and they are USB-A. On the other hand my cheap laptop only has one 10Gbps port and it is a USB-C. Unfortunately, my much more expensive gaming laptop has no 10Gbps ports.
