SSD's lower prices When?

Let me put it this way: what specific advantage besides not having to put in that little extra effort that it takes to install the SSD in the enclosure yourself (which should be easy enough to accomplish by just about anyone able to use a precision screwdriver without always breaking stuff) do you think one would be getting for this ~$47 price difference? You said it yourself that they are looking for a low price external SSD. So, my suggestion was to either just pocket the ~$47 difference and simply move on or, if 40 Gbps is better than 10 Gbps (which it is, but you know...), pocket ~$9 difference and simply move on still.
They asked and I looked up what I feel is a good external SSD from my personal experience. It just so happened that it's on sale. I don't know why your taking my suggestion so personal nor do I care. Like I said, it's up to the OP to decide what they want to do.

I've only used spinners when I needed very large capacity (like an 8TB-16TB) to house something in the past 10 years. My son has an 8GB spinner that we use for a "parking lot" for games he isn't actively playing. But we recently replaced one of his 1TB NVME's with a 4TB NVMe for the stuff he is actively using.
I have a NAS to store everything else (photos, docs, etc.)

The spinner I have is just for my backup images and everyday files. No more PC games for me.

They make great external drives if you get a decent USB-C casing.
I do have an external SATA extension if I need to attach a drive to my PC for any reason without opening up my PC.

Yeah it’s a great idea. I like the look of that one. If I know I will be doing a lot, I have the cables coming from the rear, then remove them at a point in time I won’t be needing them for a while. But they’re just extension cables.

I am in the market for a decent 5“ bay swap drive tray for SSD’s, two in fact, both with 4x SSD trays, I have so many in the case, when reinstalling, it’s a pain in the butt having to get in there and unplug them.

Most of them I have found get 50/50 reviews which isn’t reasuring.

I do have those on my old 4790K backup PC. Total of 4 SSD tool-less trays. Look for Vantec Nexstar SE.

    ...Where's my horse?
They asked and I looked up what I feel is a good external SSD from my personal experience. It just so happened that it's on sale. I don't know why your taking my suggestion so personal nor do I care. Like I said, it's up to the OP to decide what they want to do.
I am not taking your suggestion personal. I am merely pointing out the opportunity to shave an additional ~$47 off of it in spite of the fact that it is on sale, i.e. by going for something else that belongs in the same ballpark, i.e. both in terms of reliability and in terms of real-world performance.

I think the problem all to often with advice and suggestions is that people don't have an infinite amount of time to research every single option possible and then we tend to get irritated when somebody has a suggestion that runs contrary to our suggestion.

As @hdmi and @Winuser have mentioned, you have a lot of different options, 2 of which include.
  • Buy the Samsung T7 for $100 off normal price. You don't have to build anything, you just plug it in and use it, your warranty would be covered via 1 company (samsung). It may not be the absolute lowest price per GB, or fastest drive option you could get, but it's a pretty solid 2TB drive and price is quite reasonable.
  • Buy a 2TB WD Blue SN580 drive for around $114 and put it in some type of enclosure. Since my computer doesn't support 40Gbps, and I don't have a need for that much speed, I have purchased the $19 Mokin USB 3.2 10Gbps enclosure. You would get very similar performance to the first option here, and it would be $135. So, a little cheaper, and you build it yourself. Seems like a solid option, if you aren't preferential to a Samsung drive, and have concerns about that Mokin enclosure.

You could even save more money by finding a 2TB Gen 3 NVMe, because you won't be able to exceed Gen 3 NVMe speeds with a 10Gbps enclosure. But if you later wanted to pop it out of an enclosure and put it into a Gen 4 slot on a mobo, you wouldn't be getting as much speed as you possibly could.

As @hdmi suggested, you could potentially spend more on a 40Gbps enclosure and either take advantage of more speed today, or more speed later if you like for a slight difference in price.

If people don't like my Mokin suggestion, no skin off my back. I have one, it works great. Gives me about 1000MB/sec througput on my little crucial P3 drive that I put into it. It's only 1TB, but cost me like $99 to build a few years ago now.

I also have a 1TB Samsung T5 hanging off my Mac Mini that I use for time machine. Going from a spinner to an SSD here was like night and day. I was 100% satisfied with that purchase too.

SN580. Not SN850.
Yep, absolutely correct. It's funny i looked it up multiple times, but didn't realize I was typing 850 and it was returning 580. I'll update my post.

I just thought I'd interject more information regarding the current kinds of SSD drives (ctsy of AI)--here are the key differences between SATA 2, SATA 3, and NVMe SSD drives:

SATA 2 and SATA 3

SATA (Serial ATA) technology was introduced as an improvement to the existing Parallel ATA technology, which was hampered by cable size, cost, performance, and functionality [2].

SATA drives are the larger, 2.5-inch drives that most resemble classic laptop hard drives [4].

SATA SSDs use the AHCI system which is made for slower hard drives [3]. Using AHCI on SSDs do not let them run as fast as they could [3].

SATA 3 SSDs have a theoretical maximum speed of 600MB/s, but the actual speed is often slower due to various limitations [5].

NVMe

NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) technology was introduced to address the various bottlenecks of the SATA interface and communication protocols [2].

NVMe SSDs use the PCIe bus in computers [3], instead of the SATA bus, to unlock enormous bandwidth potential for storage devices [2].

NVMe drives are faster than SATA drives [1]. Transfer rates depend first on which generation of PCIe connector your NVMe drive uses, and then the individual model [1].

Currently, the maximum speed for an NVMe PCIe 3.0 (aka Gen 3) SSD is up to 3,500MB per second, while a NVMe PCIe 4.0 (aka Gen 4) SSD can hit up to 7,500MB per second [1].

I'm surprised hard drives in general (all types) aren't less popular and therefore less expensive. I volunteer in a place that sells returned things to the community. We've been getting more hard drives.

The reason I'm surprised is because I assume it's because people are more into the hype/lining of the cloud--no matter how it's phrased. Simply speaking, a drive can break down; the cloud can't.

I'm looking at an external SSD drive only to have a fast/portable way to Image 3 computers--the drive that'll go with me when the fire's at my heels.

I just got my WD Blue SN580 SSD and PiBOX enclosure; installed the SSD and (per instructions) brought up Disk Management. Up popped a window w. title Initialize Disk ("You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.")

1718055997174.png
I don't need to format the SSD for Mac use--therefore don't need to use EXFAT format.

Which partition style should I choose, MBR or GPT? (for Win10 and Win11)
By "Initialize Disk" does this window handle disk formatting?

Thanks
