Personalization Stack Notification Icons on Taskbar System Tray in Windows 11

  • Staff
Tasbar_corner_banner.png

The method in this tutorial no longer works.

This tutorial will show you how to show notification icons stacked on the taskbar corner for your account in Windows 11.

The system tray on the taskbar corner and taskbar corner overflow menu in Windows 11 shows the notification icons for apps.

If you like, you can have notifications icons stacked in two or three rows on the taskbar corner to save space when you do not want to have them hidden in the overflow menu.

EXAMPLE: Notification icons stacked and not stacked on system tray on taskbar corner

stacked_notification_icons_on_taskbar.png
Default_not_stacked_notification_icons_regedit-1.png

Here's How:

1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3

Stack_notification_icons_regedit-1.png

3 In the right pane of the StruckRects3 key, double click/tap on the Settings binary value to modify it. (see screenshot above)

4 Do step 5 (stack) or step 6 (unstack) for what you want.

5 Show Notification Icons Stacked on Taskbar System Tray

A) Place the cursor to the left of the value highlighted in yellow below in the 28 row and FE column, click/tap on the Del key, and type 02 (stacked 2 icons high) or 03 (stacked 3 icons high). (see screenshot below)

B) Click/tap on OK, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)

6 Show Notification Icons Unstacked on Taskbar System Tray

This is the default setting.

A) Place the cursor to the left of the value highlighted in yellow below in the 28 row and FE column, click/tap on the Del key, and type 01. (see screenshot below)

B) Click/tap on OK, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)

7 Either restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

8 When finished, you can close Registry Editor if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Can we change that to top-right? ( to avoid empty space in the right )

Thanks! This was one of the better tweaks i used on my desktop beside wallpaper engine and taskbar transparency.
Hope it makes a comeback someday!

Everything works and hasn't gone anywhere. Apparently, you do not have the new animation disabled in Trey. I'm posting the bat file.
In the fifth point, there is a link to a video that shows that everything works. If you do not know how to disable the New Animation, write.

I found a work around and am able to get this to work. Here is what I did...

1. Follow the instructions from this tutorial above and set the stack to 01, 02, or 03
2. In the registry, right click on the key "StuckRects3" and select permissions
3. Select Advanced
4. Disable inheritance and select "Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object"
5. Click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings for StuckRects3
6. In the Permissions for StuckRects3 select your username in the "Group or user names:" box
7. Uncheck the "Full Control" check and click OK
8. Log out
9. Log back in

If you want to make changes, you will need to give yourself Full Control, make then change, then remove Full Control.

What other things change if we do this? I mean other than stack notifications
Does that make TB revert to old one? or other things?

The only thing I am doing is making that key not writable by yourself so the system does not make the you, the user, overwrite the key with the default value of "01".

I just reinstalled Win 11 Pro and I cannot get the stacking to work at all now. There has to be an additional setting somewhere.
