Stretched-out characters on Firefox tab bar

OS
Windows 11 24H2
I have Dell Pro 16 PC16255

The tabs on my Firefox tab bar are being squashed to the left (meaning that they display less characters per tab).

The reason is that the rightmost characters are stretched out and taking up too much space (almost one quarter of the page width)

These characters are, in sequence:
+ V - ? X

The "+" opens a new tab

The "V" opens a dropdown list containing names of all tabs.

The "-" closes a tab. (I've never figured out which tab is being closed. Nor do I care.)

The "?" represents the character that looks like 2 sheets of overlapping paper.

The X character flashes when someone rings my front door bell.

These characters occupy 3.5 inches of space (one QUARTER of the screen width) !!

I would be grateful for any advice on how to squash up (or even eliminate) these USELESS characters.

I'm OK in the registry and the DOS console.

Thanks
.

I cannot find a control [in Customise toolbar] matching your description
+ V - ? X
so I think it's an add-on that is misbehaving.
Try uninstalling that add-on then, if you wish, reinstalling it.

Best of luck,
Denis

Oh, hold on.

Perhaps you could post a screenshot to clarify matters.

I thought you meant a tab containing
+ V - ? X
but perhaps you mean the symbols appearing to the right of all tabs.

In my Firefox, they just get shown to the right of all tabs and do not affect tab size or position.

The "?" represents the character that looks like 2 sheets of overlapping paper.
In my Firefox, the icon that looks like a copy symbol [2 sheets of paper] is my ForceCopy add-on.

The "-" closes a tab. (I've never figured out which tab is being closed. Nor do I care.)
I've never seen that on its own & it's not shown in the Customise toolbar icons. Perhaps that is an add-on.
I do see a - symbol as part of my zoom control [- 150% +] but nowhere else.

The X character flashes when someone rings my front door bell.
I think that must be an add-on.

Just by looking at your screen shot, I can see at a glance that I've been on a wild goose chase, as follows:

- The "+" character will ALWAYS be immediately after the last tab. So, for a single tab, the "+" character will be on the left of the page (as in your screenshot). But I often need to keep many tabs open from left to right in a WORKFLOW sequence (memory issues), so my "+" character will always be somewhere on the right

- In my case, the "V" character, which shows the list of tabs, will always be exactly where it is, with a 1-inch wasteful gap on the left of the minus sign.

At the cost of one extra line compared with my setup, your config is much more economical in tab space, with the "V" on the extreme right (marked in red).

I would be grateful if you could tell me how to achieve your config.

Thanks

My config is standard.
The V is always on the right-hand side.
The tabs extend as far as they need to and the + moves with them.
There is no "wasteful gap", the tabs fill as much as they need to while the V stays still.
Once the whole window width is full, the tabs shrink so they can all appear [until a limit is reached beyond which a move-right marker appears].

I still don't know what you mean by minus sign.
.
Thanks for sticking with me for so long :-)

By "minus sign", I mean the left symbol in the following snippet.

AFAIK, that triad appears at the top right of almost every Firefox web page - including this page. In some cases, the symbol for two sheets of paper in the centre is shown as a single page.

Thanks

This is the Window control box.

Clicking on the left-hand symbol minimises the window [not close the window].
Clicking on the middle symbol restores the window to its previous non-maximised, non-minimised window size. Clicking on it also alters its function and appearance; it becomes a single square meaning maximise the window.
Clicking on the X symbol closes the window.

that triad appears at the top right of almost every Firefox web page
And in almost every other window, not just Firefox.

All the best,
Denis
