Hey guys,

I have deleted svchost through AVG mistakenly and now every application is saying Application not found.

How to fix it ?

Try this first. If you're lucky it'll fix things...

1. Open a command prompt as Admin and run these commands one at a time...

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

As a last resort if all else fails, doing a repair install of Windows could be tried.

You gotta be careful about sharing Windows files. Due to patching, sometimes your copy isn't the same version as the one that belongs on their Windows (as installed). It might or might not work.

I would think that after placing the file in System32, checking Windows update would deal with any version differences. Also, patch Tuesday is August 13th.

I don't 'know" for sure, but that's what I assume would happen.

If someone has a copy from the exact same version number of Win 11, that would ofc be a better choice.
But even a slightly different version of svchost.exe should be better than no version.

Actually the svchost.exe in System32 is a hard link, as are most of the files in System32. The other location for svchost.exe in in the WinSxS Component Store.

It's not a good idea to replace such a hard link file as it will no longer be linked to the original.

AVG would almost certainly have only deleted svchost.exe from C:\Windows\System32. The entry in the Component Store should still be intact. If so, then the SFC /ScanNow should reinstate the entry in System32.

If by some chance it has been deleted from the component store too, then the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command should repair the component store by downloading a new copy. After that you'd need to run the SFC command again to put the hard link back in System32.

The are the same because they are all hard links pointing to the same single file, as I explained in post #6.

...there is only the one file on the drive, but it is listed in two separate folders by means of hard links. I only have the two because I've used DISM to clean up my component store.

I think AVG has a stand alone file shredder too, like CCleaner.
I know my Bitdefender does.

But, it could have also popped up in a scan, for whatever reason.
OP did say he "deleted" svchost.

AVG would almost certainly have only deleted svchost.exe from C:\Windows\System32. The entry in the Component Store should still be intact. If so, then the SFC /ScanNow should reinstate the entry in System32.

If by some chance it has been deleted from the component store too, then the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command should repair the component store by downloading a new copy. After that you'd need to run the SFC command again to put the hard link back in System32.

When the SFC and DISM commands cannot fix things, then its time to try an in-place repair install, as @Marcus Vinicus suggested in post #3.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Seems like the in-place repair install is the best option now. It would be the quickest fix.

Option 1 is not working with Windows Update.

So I am using the Option 2 and I hope it will fix the issue.

It dosent fixed the issue. All I have to do is to reinstall Windows.
