I routinely upgrade old laptops with an SSD disk. I always clone the old hard disk to the SSD so the owner can keep both his/her data and applications. Never had to initialize the new SSD.

I put a second SSD in this machine for extra storage and just initialised it through Disk Manager, of course I never touched the SSD with the OS on

The whole purpose of having a backup image and a Macrium Reflect USB flash drive is to be able to restore your image to a brand new, fresh out of the box drive should your existing drive fail. So, upon failure of your existing drive the steps are:
1. Remove the failed drive.
2. Install the replacement drive, brand new fresh out of the box.
3. Boot the computer from your Macrium Reflect Rescue drive.
4. Restore your disk image.
5. Reboot computer from new drive.

With Windows 10 and Windows 11, I doubt one would need to use it. Of course, there could be the exception.

This is such a common use case for people upgrading their HDDs to SSDs, etc. Isn't there a nice little tutorial from Macrium (or Aomei or Samsung or Crucial or whoever) ?

The simple steps are:
1. Create an image of the existing drive saved to an external (USB) drive or network location (NAS).
2. Remove the old drive.
3. Install the replacement drive, brand new fresh out of the box.
4. Boot the computer from your Macrium Reflect Rescue drive.
5. Restore your disk image from the external source where it is stored to the newly installed drive (resize partitions if you need to).
6. Reboot computer from new drive.

It really is just that simple.
