Time and Language Sync Clock Time with Internet Time Server in Windows 11

  • Staff
Time_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to manually synchronize the clock time with an Internet time server for all users in Windows 11.

Time is a measure in which events can be ordered from the past through the present into the future, and also the measure of durations of events and the intervals between them.

Your PC's system clock is used to record the time whenever you create or modify files on your PC.

You can synchronize the Windows system clock with an Internet time server to match the time on the time server. This will help ensure the clock's time on your PC is accurate.

Your clock is typically automatically synced once a week and needs to be connected to the Internet for the synchronization to occur.

References:

You must be signed in as an administrator to synchronize the system clock time.

Contents

  • Option One: Sync Clock with Internet Time Server in Settings
  • Option Two: Sync Clock with Internet Time Server in Control Panel
  • Option Three: Sync Clock with Internet Time Server using Command

OPTION ONE

Change Time in Settings

If your PC is joined to a domain, you will not be able to use this option to sync the clock time.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Time & language on the left side, and click/tap on Date & time on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Settings-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Sync now button under Additional settings on the right side. (see screenshot below)

You will see the last successful time synchronization and time server used under Sync now in Additional settings.

Sync_time_in_Settings-2.png

4 You will see a checkmark indicating the time has been successfully synced. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Settings-3.png

5 You can now close Settings if you like.

OPTION TWO

Sync Clock with Internet Time Server in Control Panel

If your PC is joined to a domain, you will not be able to use this option to sync the clock time.

1 Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Date and Time icon.

2 You can close the Control Panel if you like.

3 Click/tap on the Internet Time tab, and click/tap on the Change settings button. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-1.png

4 Click/tap on the Update now button. (see screenshot below)

It is required to have the Synchronize with an Internet time server box checked to Update now.

If you like, you can select or type the name of an Internet time server to use to sync with instead.

If an error occurred, click/tap on Update now again to see if it may successfully synchronize.

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-2.png

5 Click/tap on OK when the clock has been successfully synced. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-3.png

6 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-4.png

OPTION THREE

Sync Clock with Internet Time Server using Command

1 Open Windows Terminal (Admin), and select Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste the command below you want to use into the elevated terminal, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

(Use if not joined to domain)
w32tm /resync

OR

(Use if joined to domain)
net time /domain

If you get a The service has not been started. (0x80070426) error, then it means that you need to start the Windows Time service using the net start w32time command, and try again.

If you get a The computer did not resync because no time data was available error, then you should be able to try again until successful.

3 You can close Windows Terminal if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hello, :-)

Usually, you would just need to keep trying to sync off and on until it can with that error message.

Just to verify, are you using the default time server?

Just to verify, are you sign in to an administrator account when trying to sync the time?

The error message indicates it could be an Internet connection issue. Double check your firewall rules to make sure it's not getting blocked.

I have a problem with my clock, every reboot it delays something like 3 seconds, I don't know why or if it's something from the motherboard.

so to solve this I use an application that syncs as soon as windows starts, Time Sync .

Hi, Further I had gone in to the mcafee settings and found net time port 123 and ticked to access the internet. Still sync fails . I tried netstat -ab command to view the open ports . i could find port 123 but no pid etc.
I think that you have given tutorials in all the editions of windows starting vista.
but microsoft does not seem to correct the issues associated with this problem.

I have had trouble with Win 11 time syncing for quite a while. I recently found that the time sync was timing out. I have it working now using a time server at my ISP. I am in Australia and my ping time to several North American time servers was about 240 Milli-seconds. Google's time server was better at about 140 and my ISP was never more than 6 Milli-seconds. I don't recall having trouble when I was using Win 10.

hi, bobd,
Your Quote: nd my ISP was never more than 6 Milli-seconds. I don't recall having trouble when I was using Win 10.
how do i find my isp time server. I will try to google in the mean while.
The weird thing is , it shows the error and at the same time, puts the last sync was done with .com in the same time it is queried as I have given in the picture.

Hi, Brink, I had almost read so many articles and questions and answers on time sync. I could not even ping with time.windows.com or time.nist.gov, as has been given as default ntp servers.
I would say, microsoft utterly failed to fix this errors with a kind of a update. i also read that this has become after a windows update, which it gives to windows 7 long time ago.
I have tried pinging so many servers and the success was only with time.google.com and 0.pool.ntp.org
Eventhough I add ntp servers in registry, those are not working.
Where I could send feed back to microsoft tech team.
Millions of users use windows and time sync is a must for every one.

Many global time servers do not accept ping requests. MS and Google have multiple datacenters which provide time sync service, you should be assigned to one "local" to your geography. If you're using a non-ISP DNS provider, like Google DNS or CloudFlare, it may be redirecting you to a datacenter in the wrong part of the world.

I'm not sure why my first response was deleted, try my previous suggestion. None of the other instructions actually test if NTP data is passing to your PC.

If your DNS provider is working normally, time.windows.com should geo-balance you to the "nearest" MS datacenter. There's one in Australia, and another in Singapore. Geo-balancing sometimes gets confused, since they go by network provider IP blocks.

You got me thinking (always dangerous). So I did what you were advising about time.windows.com
The first set of results were with my router pointing to 1.1.1.1 DNS and the second set are using my ISP's DNS.
time.windows.com is still unreliable. time.google.com still pings at about 140mS.

Looking deeper on Google results, the Windows error "Last successful time synchronization: 01/08/2015" is common with NTP troubles.
The reported date is apparently a default value, and has nothing to do with your PC's age.

Can't sync time: Time synchronisation failed
User had two PC's with the same problem. He temporarily switched to a mobile hotspot, which fixed the problem (different carrier).

Cannot sync with any NTP server on windows 10
"w32tm /stripchart" was working. And the issue turned out their ISP was blocking NTP traffic.

Automatic time sync is not working in Windows 10
(From your same timezone) confirms their ISP was also blocking traffic.

Your ISP (or router) blocking traffic makes the most sense, as changing to pool.ntp.org or time.google.com makes no difference. You could check with a neighbor or friend who uses the same ISP if they have similar problems.
