I have tried various apps to back up my system and files, in case of a catastrophic failure. Although one seemed to work, when I need it, it failed. I would appreciate any advice along these lines.

Hasleo Backup is free and excellent. But most forum members choose Macrium Reflect, which is a paid-for app. Use the search button top-right and look for Hasleo or Macrium and you will find dozens of discussions.

My personal choice is Macrium Reflect. This is subscription software now, but there used to be a free version. Although the free version has been retired now, it can still be downloaded from Macrium, and it still works in Windows 11 - even in the latest Insider builds.     fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

I have completed using Hasleo. The partition that I used to store the system show data. The partition I used to store the files, shows no data. So I don't know if my files were stored or not. Is there any way to tell if there is data stored in the File partition?

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I dont know if you can figure out why a backup fails to restore but it usually involves a missing part of a string of backups and for that reason I never allow these apps to do incremental or differential backups. I only do full disk or partition images with a single volume and I do my work folders separately.

I use either Acronis or Macrium for disk imaging and turn off scheduling. I use Acronis for my old computer that has Win-7 and 11 and I use Macrium for the new PC because I have not tested Acronis on my new computer though I'm guessing it would work with Secure Boot turned off. I use AOMEI Backupper for files but I only use the "File Sync" part of the program. The File Sync is not a true sync . . . If I delete a file in the source it does not delete it in the destination, it only overwrites changed files or adds new ones. This is good in case I run a sync after accidentally deleting something. This way I dont have to have a lot of image backups. All this is to an internal backup drive that I ocasionally sync to an external drive.

Like Ghot's tagline . . . You can never have too much backup

Hasleo disk/partition images are stored as .DBI files.

I dont know if the same format is used for file backup.

Try searching for *.DBI with Voidtools Everything or whatever you use for searching

I've tried most of them, I found Hasleo Backup to be quite good and free is hard to beat. I also have been using Acronis True Image for years. Both have allowed recovery when needed.

I have multiple backups on different media types as well.

With EaseUS, you can view the files from within their container. 🤷‍♂️

Dont file backups have this for vieweing and copying out individual files

I have a vague recollection that easeus uses ddexec so can be viewed with explorer. I think Acronis does something similar or used to.

Acronis has two ways to view backups, their own viewer or right-click/mount that I only discovered after years of using it. I prefer the later now that I found it.
