When is the last time you used System Restore?
I'm starting to think that it might be deprecated in the near future.

SystemPropertiesProtection.exe, which is the executable for System Protection is located in %WinDir%\System32.
SystemPropertiesProtection.exe is also located in %WinDir%\SysWOW64, but it doesn't open System Protection. It opens System Properties.

Most of the executables located in both %WinDir%\System32 and %WinDir%\SysWOW64 open to the same thing. But not SystemPropertiesProtection.exe.

Regardless of the 32-bit / 64-bit discrepancies, I think Microsoft is planning to abandon System Restore in the near future. Let's face it. It's never been the most reliable utility. As we now know, Microsoft is heading down the system image route with Point-In-Time Restore (PITR). I wouldn't even be surprised to see Microsoft acquire a fully featured image application in the future.

Thoughts?

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?

Thoughts?
Your argument is tenuous at best as PITR or conventional restore points both need VSS. PITRs are only temporary (72 hour shelf life). I cannot say tif PITR software is independent of Restore Points or does it use much of the existing Restore Point infrastucture (my guess).

As for deprecation - Windows 11 does have full fledged image capability albeit allegedy deprecated. They deprecated it years ago but it is still there albeit MS recommend to use 3rd party tools. Actually quite a few deprecated features are still there after years of deprecation.

To some extent the meaning of deprecation has softened to mean "features will not be developed further but COULD (rather than WILL) be removed at some point in the future".

Herein lies a suble point totally lost on the boringly zealous anti-telemetry brigade i.e. MS often uses telemetry to assess if a feature is TRULY no longer used to decide to remove it (unless it is removed for different reasons e.g. security).

So maybe it will get deprecated (indeed MS wanted to remove it at outset of Windows 10 but soon realised this was not a good idea).

So I believe it will be years before it is ever removed although I accept it could get deprecated at some point in the future but unlikely for Windows 11.

If it did get deprecated, I am pretty sure that the only change we would see is that restore points would be turned off by default.

I used it with Windows XP back in the day (more than 20 years ago), but only because I didn’t know how to back up my system at the time with third party applications. It was never reliable, it would use disk space in a significant way (more of a problem then with smaller capacity hard disks), and malware infections would often stick to system restore recovering points.

Nowadays with modern imaging programs it is really unnecessary, and it would make images bigger if left on for a long time. After any major upgrade of Windows I usually check if it is still off, as sometimes Windows reactivates it automatically with the upgrade.

Another reason for stopping using it was also the existence of virtual programs like ShadowUser and Shadow Defender (both abandoned software) which would instantly recover the system with a simple reboot. Again, imaging programs have become so fast nowadays that they can easily replace those applications. I still would love to have Shadow Defender on Windows 11, but that’s another topic.

"deprecated in the near future" I Agree !! I haven"t used SR in 3 - 4 years ? What I would like to know, is why it only goes back about a week max.? Even when I "click on show more restore points" Is there a way to make it hold older restore points? Now use Macrium Reflect - So it's not a major concern. cheers

When is the last time you used System Restore?
I stopped using SR a while ago on all PCs and rely on Reflect for backups

There was a time in Windows 10 with version 1803 when system restore would routinely fail. Remember this one? System Restore Failure AppxStaging 0x80070005 - Windows 10 Help Forums. I have relied on Macrium Reflect since then.

However, there have been a couple of times when it was more appropriate to try system restore than using a Macrium image - some things that weren't in the most recent image that needed to be kept.

It seems to work reliably these days. However it is so very slow! Restoring a Macrium image is far faster.

Before Windows had System Restore, GoBack was quite popular. It even came preinstalled on some computers. It changed company names over the years.

Someone probably got a pay rise for coming up with that stupid "Show more restore points" idea. 😄 I remember a time before that was there.
