System Restore

System Restore neither backs up, secures nor modifies personal data.

If you looked at the file type list via the link I gave you, you could have confirmed that.

Google would also have informed you of that. Try searching thus:
View attachment 173280

The one type of personal file that could be caught would be script files where the file type is in the list I indicated.
I already have robocopy/powershell script for backup files. Just wanted to check it's not double work :)

It only restores certain things from the shadowcopy. If you want anything else out of the shadowcopy you can fish them out yourself as described in my previous post.

When is the last time you used System Restore?
There was a time in Windows 10 with version 1803 when system restore would routinely fail. Remember this one? System Restore Failure AppxStaging 0x80070005 - Windows 10 Help Forums. I have relied on Macrium Reflect since then.

However, there have been a couple of times when it was more appropriate to try system restore than using a Macrium image
Does anyone still use System Restore?
Was it a successful restoration?
Today was one of those (very) rare occasions when a System Restore was more appropriate than restoring a Reflect system image.

I had forgotten just how excruciatingly slow it was (paint dries quicker) but yes, it was completely successful.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

In the shadowcopy.

you can easily test .

create a text file on your desktop

create a restore point

delete the text file from your desktop.

look in the shadowcopy for it.

to see the contents of your shadowcopies and copy stuff out you can either link to them with a simple batch file

or an easy to use litle portable program is very handy

for example

I've noticed something odd happening with my System Restore settings lately.
Max Usage keeps dropping back to 2%. I adjust it back to 10%, but after a day or two when I go to check, it's back to 2% again, which prevents some restore points.

try setting it via reg

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\cfg

If it still reverts, you can set that as a scheduled task to reset it at whatever interval you want.

You could also do it with vssadmin

Code:
vssadmin list shadowstorage

Code:
vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=X: /On=X: /MaxSize=NGB

Replace X with drive letter of OS

Replace N with the number of GBs to use for system restore
