Windows 11 Pro Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.3155)
Seems like my Windows 11 has suddenly decided to play some system sounds, specifically a soft click when I hover over browser tabs, Windows explorer breadcrumbs, etc. Setting the sound scheme to No Sounds in the control panel Sound app doesn't resolve it, the clicking blithely goes on. Mighty annoying. Could this be a Windows update thingy ?

Could be some virus/etc maybe? What AV or Security software do you use? Try running a full scope of your system. If sound sets are set to off then honestly Nothing will make a sound. I had a similar scenario once and it was a virus. Just saying.

Are you sure you have the No sounds theme? Are there any sounds assigned by another application? To check right-click on the speaker icon on the taskbar and select sounds. Just to make sure, select Windows Default, click apply, and then select No sounds and click apply again.

Just try rebooting. It often sorts out weird anomalies.

I should have thought of rebooting first of all... indeed that did the trick. As so often with Windows 🙄

Yeah, Windows is a joke sometimes. A rather bad one.
BTW I tried your suggestion (which seemed to make sense as I DID have a modified sound scheme to start with) , but it did not help.
