Hello.

I wanted to know if someone could clarify a doubt I have regarding the labels that the file explorer allows you to assign to mp3 files.

The thing is that there are two labels referring to the artist, and honestly, I have searched for information on what Windows understands for each of them, but I can't find anything and I feel like I'm going against the world assigning labels to my mp3 files.

- Album artist: I use this as the main artist. It seems surreal to me that they have put the album artist when you can have individual songs, as happens to me. The problem comes when I transfer these songs to a player, where it turns out that it doesn't take this label as the "main artist".

- Collaborating artists: I understand that these are those who have participated in the song, but are not the main creators. That is, when a song appears as "featured", for example. Of course, this is the label that players use as the "main artist".

So, these labels are very confusing to me, because I don't understand the meaning that Windows is trying to give them. So, could someone explain to me or tell me where to get information about what kind of information (interpreters in this case) I have to put on each label?

Thank you very much.

Look into a free app called MP3Tag. I've used it for years to keep all my tagging consistant. What you will see in explorer depends on what you tell mp3tag to enter. And the amount of the info you see depends on how much info you tell MP3Tag to enter. You can use it for individual files or with an entire folder. Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...)

I'm not sure if I understood correctly.

Are you telling me that with the MP3Tag application I can modify the tags that are displayed in the Windows file explorer?

yep. scan through the documentation. I sugget you copy one of your music folders and play around with it to see it it's right for you. It adds a right click context menu entry to allow for quick editing on the fly of a file or entire folder. There's a little learning curve but not much. It lets you see only what you want in explorer.

Never mind how those properties are labeled in Explorer. Collaborating artist is the song artist property. That's the one that must be populated to appear correctly in all players. Album artist is optional but is obviously set the same for a typical one artist album.
