Taking Control of OneDrive?

Sure, they want to generate revenue. Obviously there is going to be a relatively small amount of disk space given away for free. iCloud is 5GB free, Dropbox is 2GB free, Google drive is one of the best at 15GB of free space with Google Drive.

I think the key difference is that Microsoft provides something else of pretty solid value for paying for more storage space. Unlike the other vendors, you get the full Microsoft Office Suite. It's basically the pro version of Office too....not just the small home and student version. You get Mac and Windows versions. You can install on whatever you like. You can share your subscription with 6 people (if you buy the family account), and the primary sub holder gets the premium copilot features.

All in all, you get a whole lot for basically less money than any other provider charges you for far less storage. 6TB with Apple is $30 a month. or $360 a year. 2TB of Google drive is $9.99 a month. 2TB with OneDrive is $9.99 a year.
You know, although Google may be offering the largest free/initial bait of online storage with 15 GB and, okay, kudos to them, but that is still an insanely low amount of storage space in this day and age! Just my laptop full backup is 145 GB, so factor in my other files and a basic retention period, I'd say 1 TB of storage space should be the basic/initial bait! 😁

Much as my OneDrive/Microsoft 365 subscription is included as part of my ISP service, should that ever change in the future, the reason I would still favor and heavily look at the Microsoft 365 plan is because, after starting with AWS and then transitioning to GCP and then transitioning to OneDrive, the best one that seamlessly integrates with Windows for my use case has been OneDrive.

To prevent onedrive (take control) so it cant start syncing without the users knowledge even with an evil update that enables it.. or a repair install enables it ..or your evil friend enables it...... In the firewall block the domains onedrive.com and... *.files.1drv.com
and you just killed onedrive
Edit: My first rule of evil systems that not always "stay put" under all circumstances... block the unwanted domains..
I fully appreciate and understand that, though not necessarily their own fault, some people do not fully understand OneDrive and how it works; as such, even something like this is not needed because OneDrive is not broken.

Case in point: On my system, OneDrive, by default, only syncs one-way from my system to OneDrive and I control all of that via the standard Windows File Manager UI. It's that simple and, most of all, it's important to note that although this is non-standard OneDrive usage, I am still able to enable this functionality with the standard Windows UI and without any programming or technical hacks.

For the few people I help with Onedrive I always right click on OneDrive folder and then select "Always keep on this device". Then if they for some reason stop paying ( the 100GB option ) or end their M365 subscription their files are safe on their computer.

I fully appreciate and understand that, though not necessarily their own fault, some people do not fully understand OneDrive and how it works; as such, even something like this is not needed because OneDrive is not broken.
No it is not the users fault.. it is Microsoft's fault all together.
Even @TraderGary that uses OneDrive and really like OneDrive have the same opinion as me that OneDrive should not be an opt-out feature. and it should include a lot of information on how to use it if a user want to use it... on this point we agree and that is bad news for Microsoft when one liking OneDrive and one hating OneDrive can agree on something. *lol* 😅

With that said where we have different opinions. :-) .. that is that i think OneDrive should not even be installed as default when installing windows.
As MS have the MS-store and is easy to use.. it is soooooooooooo freaking easy to install OneDrive if the user actually want to use OneDrive.

Windows11 Home/Pro is a bloatware OS.. darn even back in the days with Windows XP/7 when you bought an OEM computer had less bloat installed then a clean install of windows 11 Home/pro have today.
you should not spend more time "cleaning up" (uninstall and disable features) then you spend on installing what you actually wants.
Some things in windows 11 cant even be uninstalled unless you use Revo or other tricks to uninstall things. this is just wrong...

As for OneDrive.... I have said it many times.... I give MS an A for effort, but a big fat F for bad execution on the whole OneDrive thing....
It really is a good feature that many have use for, this is the "A"...... but OneDrive has so many faults, so its way better to go with another cloud-service provider. and this is the big fat F.

Yup, totally agree, OneDrive behaves so aggressively by default, that it's basically hijacking and moving your data without asking for any permission and then they want to hold your data for ransom and pressure you to subscribe for adequate storage space. That's just not acceptable to so many users and for the inexperienced users it's just a lot of confusion and frustration they didn't ask for or deserve. No wonder it is so literally hated and despised by so many. I wish Microsoft kept actual data on how users feel about that app but no public numbers are available. I'd bet most users aren't willing participants though, they just don't know how to stop and/or remove it and reluctantly accept it.

*LOL* 😅 there is a reason for Microsoft dont publish those statistics.. as it would be way to easy for everyone to see that 60-70% of what microsoft is doing is unliked by people.
They dont want to contribute to more bad PR about themselves. *LOL* 🤣

Not sure why I would ever want to go with another cloud provider for cloud storage space. OneDrive works great, and it provides THE MOST space for the "LOWEST COST" and it also comes with Microsoft Office.

we have agreed in other threads, that onedrive wasn't a backup feature ;-)
and still my opinion is valid.. as an idiot can use MS-store as it is the most user friendly solution ever made by Microsoft.. If they want it.. its just a few clicks away from being on the system.
A lot of threads in here is made by people that dont want it.. and uninstall it and loses data as they didn't even know the data was moved from local storage to the cloud.
And you call it one of the best features.. :-)
I still say A for effort, but an F for bad execution..

Not sure why I would ever want to go with another cloud provider for cloud storage space. OneDrive works great, and it provides THE MOST space for the "LOWEST COST" and it also comes with Microsoft Office.
Why go for another provider.. It lacks end-to-end encryption(also known as zero-knowlage storage).. They scan your storage content (Microsoft themselves have stated they scan onedrive content for different things) so its not me saying it.. its MS.

The most space for the lowest costs.. this is when people is cheap.. i dont want everything for free but they want high security, and they want high Privacy.
If its free.. you are the product.
Google is free as you pay with your data.. Microsoft services is often free as you pay with your data.. Apple services is often free as you pay with your data.

So what is your privacy, security and integrity worth? $0 ??

Its not a full fledged backup suite, but it certainly can be thought of as a backup.

If you have 1 and only 1 copy of a file in your local hard drive, you have no backup. If you also have that same file on another hard drive, a flash drive, another computer or in the cloud you have a backup.

If its so easy for an end user to go to ms store and install and configure OneDrive, why is it to hard for tech enthusiasts to not save to it or lose their files when they do use it? Just playing devil's advocate.

I dont need true end to end encryption of the stuff I put in OneDrive. If I did, I can encrypt it before I upload it. I'm not going to just pay more for some feature that I dont really need.. its encrypted in transit and its encrypted at rest. If law enforcement wants to see my notes on how I configured claude code on my mac, well I hope they enjoy it.

I call it a great feature as its a drop dead easy way to access your data from multiple computers or devices in your own home, its an automatic second copy of a file offside, if your computer dies or is stolen, when you log back into your new device your stuff is just all magically there. And you have revision history so if you mess up a file or get ransomware, you can just grab the old version of the file from the cloud. If you want to share a file with somebody and collaborate with them, its super easy to do. There are a lot of things going for it. OneDrive is not the problem. How the windows backup tool was configured apparently is. That doesnt make onedrive garbage.

so the ones that have onedrive and onedrive upload the files to the cloud and remove the file from local storage.. isn't that still 1 file?
Just saying what several threads in here saying.. they got their content uploaded and the local files was removed.
are they all lying? did they have a local file even they posted they didn't.

If its so easy for an end user to go to ms store and install and configure OneDrive, why is it to hard for tech enthusiasts to not save to it or lose their files when they do use it? Just playing devil's advocate.
*lol* it might be 10% of all members in here that has the knowledge to be classified as tech enthusiasts.. i dont see them posting those onedrive threads.
So as the devil advocate, point out the tech enthusiasts that is that poor on configure onedrive. :-)

Since when did Microsoft become a law enforcement agency?
Still you forget the bigger picture,.... if MS get a data-breach and all users onedrive content will end up on darknet.
Maybe not you have pictures and documents you dont care if the whole world sees and you dont care about encryption.. but other do and dont even know their data is unencrypted in the cloud.
This is why cloud storage should be totally encrypted when it is stored on the servers disk-pools. end to end encryption to prevent future CVE or hacks that cause data-leaks. IT security one on one.. what is secure server setup today might be unsecure tomorrow.

I call it a great feature as its a drop dead easy way to access your data from multiple computers or devices in your own home, its an automatic second copy of a file offside, if your computer dies or is stolen, when you log back into your new device your stuff is just all magically there. I dont say Onedrive is a bad idea.. i did gave them an A for effort.. its the poor execution that makes it bad.
1. the user often dont even know its an opt-out feature that was enabled on first day.
2. it do not offer end-to-end encryption, so its vulnerable if someone get server access. This start to be a real threat with big AI and state backed hackers. Just wait and see within a year or two.
3. MS is scanning all your content for certain things.. as it AI scanning it get false positives so a human has to going thru the content.

So you say.. Go for microsoft, encryption is a joke, so why even use bitlocker.. privacy is dead, so just start to upload all your content to facebook instead and save cloud storage costs..

I like your expression.... is just all magically there... it has to be an MS sale-pitch. :-) (y)

Here is what is a joke. People thinking Microsoft care about your security your privicy and your integrity.
MS is caring about money and how to make more money out of the users.

so the ones that have onedrive and onedrive upload the files to the cloud and remove the file from local storage.. isn't that still 1 file?
Just saying what several threads in here saying.. they got their content uploaded and the local files was removed.
are they all lying? did they have a local file even they posted they didn't
No, but this again is an issue with Backup and not OneDrive. When backup was turned on, it moved files from the local users document folder to the local users onedrive documents folder. Then it synced them to cloud. Then, if they turned off backup it didnt put the files back into the users document folder. However. The files were still in OneDrive. And I dont see how its possible they didnt know this because it put a shortcut in the directory that took you right to your files in OneDrive. I'm not sure how people managed ro lose files.
Still you forget the bigger picture,.... if MS get a data-breach and all users onedrive content will end up on darknet
Maybe not you have pictures and documents you dont care if the whole world sees and you dont care about encryption.. but other do and dont even know their data is unencrypted in the cloud.
The data is encrypted at rest. But obviously, the application and tool has to be able to decrypt it. Yes, a data breach could expose onedrive data to the world. Which is why you pick and choose what you put there. You can use personal vault or encrypt things on your own before you upload for sensitive things.

This is why cloud storage should be totally encrypted when it is stored on the servers disk-pools. end to end encryption to prevent future CVE or hacks that cause data-leaks. IT security one on one.. what is secure server setup today might be unsecure tomorrow.
It is encrypted. But Microsoft has possession of the encryption keys to decrypt it.
2. it do not offer end-to-end encryption, so its vulnerable if someone get server access. This start to be a real threat with big AI and state backed hackers. Just wait and see within a year or two.
The data is encrypted at rest. If bob logs into the server msonedrive01east and causally opens the D drive, he is not going to just see piles and piles of clear text data.

While not a guarantee, OneDrive has been around for approx 20 years without a massive company wide infrastructure breach impacting numerous customers.
I like your expression.... is just all magically there... it has to be an MS sale-pitch. :-) (y)
So, you cannot imagine a single instance where a casual computer user bought a laptop, signed in with an MS account, knowingly or unknowingly saved data to their OneDrive, lost the laptop, or damaged the laptop, got a new one, logged in and was relieved to see their data wasn't lost after all. I mean you may not like the cloud, you may not be willing to pay for OneDrive, but it seems like you could imagine a scenario where this worked in somebodies favor. That's all I saying. Why not be proactive and setup a sync of data to another location and help out the customer. If the customer decides they don't want it, they can save the data to their NAS. Or usb key. Or secondary drive, or wherever they choose.

MS is caring about money and how to make more money out of the users
Wow, a for profit company who wants to make profit. And a publicly traded company that has to answer to shareholders.

Perhaps they want to entice people as well to their OS and keep people from moving to Linux or Mac. Being honest, Mac has a fantastic backup system called Time Machine and it makes it simple to replace or upgrade to a new Mac. You can go back to any point in time and get just a single file or folder back. Why Microsoft has never had an equivalent to me is just nuts. OneDrive really is the closest thing they natively offer and its really not compatible at all.

I'm not trying to say everybody should absolutely use OneDrive and just trust em bro. But I can absolutely see various reasons why MS put it there, both for function and profit. Then they made office 365 crazy affordable to bring people in, and then they kept the price consistent for over a decade. Not bringing files back from shutting off backup is probably a blunder, but to me that doesn't make OneDrive and instant F. Its not a total fail, but clearly it's not something everybody is gonna trust. But it does work, and it works well. Hasn't been breached in 20 years and hasn't ever lost any of my data and I've been using it since it was Sky Drive.

It certainly is an instant F for people that lost files due to the way it's documented and the behavior that allows people to easily lose files!

Something like this should play to the lowest common denominator, not to the people that carefully read the documentation and understand the functions. Most people are not going to read that carefully, and many that do will probably miss some key points. A backup should be just that, a copy of the data, but it should never touch the original data for any reason.

I'm not going to argue that OneDrive doesn't work properly if you do everything right, but it shouldn't toss your data if you do something wrong! 🙄

Could somebody please explain to me, how people "lost files"? I think this is the part that really has me confused. The way I think about "lost files" would be that the files were permanently nuked, gone, never to be seen again. I think the worst case scenario here was that the location of the file was temporarily unknown.

Once Backup was shutoff, a shortcut was immediately placed in the original My Documents folder (which was otherwise empty), and that shortcut pointed to the C:\users\username\OneDrive\Documents folder (which would still contain 100% of your documents). You could easily copy or move the files from C:\users\username\OneDrive\Documents back to the original C:\users\username\Documents folder. Or if you elected to do nothing, you could continue to use that shortcut to go to the new location. Or you could just navigate to the new location via File Explorer. The point being, the files would always continue to remain in C:\users\username\OneDrive\Documents in perpetuity.

I have to admit that when I read your question, I couldn't stop laughing! 🤣

Not that I certainly know the answer and I, too, am curious to know what the answer(s) is/are but, in the meantime, allow me to humor you by speculating/guessing... 🤣

Perhaps they mean that files were deleted from OneDrive (via the app or web) and, due to the sync, the files were then deleted locally? In this situation, the deleted files will not be in the local Recycle Bin; therefore, the files have been "lost?" Well, no, because they are available in the OneDrive Recycle Bin! 👏🥳🎉😁

Ok, then perhaps they mean that the files were deleted from the local OneDrive folder (i.e., outside of the OneDrive app, using File Explorer, for example) so, of course, they disappeared from the C: drive; therefore, the files have been "lost?" Well, no, because not only are the files available in your local Recycle Bin but they are also in the OneDrive Recycle Bin! Imagine that! 😱👏🥳🎉😁

One more try: If you go through the lengths that I do to use OneDrive as a one-way sync only (i.e., from PC to OneDrive, with the physical copy only existing on OneDrive) then, yeah, now the possibility of losing files is much more realistic because there is only one copy. But then again, there's always the OneDrive Recycle Bin to the rescue! 👏🥳🎉😁 That is, unless you are lazy and procrastinate, waiting only until after the retention window closes to try to recover your files! 😒

Even in my use case, though, the files I upload to OneDrive are also on a USB drive and my NAS, which prevents a single point of failure/data loss.

So, yeah, not sure what is meant by "lost" files, but I tried! 😂

For me, personally, I've had confidence in OneDrive for close to 20 years, and it's the offsite component of my 3-2-1 Backup Strategy, That's my bottom line. You guys carry on, use it, delete it, make fun of it, do what you like.

I like doing that, too. When MS gets persistent, I get persistent. The curse of the reappearing OneDrive forces one to be vigilant and keep an eye out for this (what I consider) garbage that never really goes away.

Don't force crap down people's noses for those who don't want it. :poop:

I don't know which forums Microsoft has their interns scanning, but I hope this forum is one of them. It would do them a world of good!

Then again, based on all the layoffs they've had in recent times, they've probably cut those programs, too. 😒
