I installed W11 RTM today, gave it a test drive and found too many Taskbar features missing. I think many advanced users will be reporting the same information through the Feedback Hub as I have already done.

Missing features: Right click Taskbar to access (Task Manager), right click Taskbar to access Taskbar options, right-click Taskbar to setup the Quick Launch Area, no Action Center on right side of Taskbar.

Nice things: The folder colors, yes, those are nice but lend nothing to productivity. Ability to move Start Button to left side of Taskbar, yup, that's nice too.

I think after tens of thousands of W10 upgrades via Windows 11 download page with the installation tool or from Windows Updates in W10, Windows developers will see a trend from the feedback that many of us took W11 out for a drive but rolled it back to W10 due to the missing features.

I will install it again when I see we have a more useful Taskbar, especially the QLA and ability to right-click the Taskbar for options. :)

PS The upgrade went smoothly. All previously installed programs and apps worked as they should (I simply could not launch them from the QLA :confused:.

I understand the original poster's issue with the task manager myself. Yes, you can just right click the start button. However, that's a tiny icon that you have to go hit, as opposed to anywhere on the taskbar as it was in 10. I submitted the same feedback myself, not because it's a huge issue, but because it just feels like a step backward in usability to me.

Just thought also one could resize the taskbar making the icons bigger and there is other taskbar hacks to enlarge the taskbar icons also. so yeah thats all I was thinkin.

Welcome to Eleven Forum

You can get the same menu as the right-click on Start by pressing WinKey+X on the keyboard, same as you could in 10.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

You are correct. Having to aim at the Start Button is a PIA when simply pointing at a blank area on the Taskbar is so quick and easy. I think a lot of Windows owners do not use the Right-Click or at best, very little. That being said, if one does not use Right Clicking (a lot) then opinions would vary greatly.

Eventually (earlier than later) Microsoft will see that these missing (common features) used by Right Clickers was a mistake and will give them back to us ASAP.

@Richj44

Please include in your Feedback to give us back the Quick Launch Area. That is another hallmark of Windows. I have files, folders and program shortcuts in my QLA. Very fast to access those. When I am working on my computer I don't like using the keyboard to access a feature. The old days was Ctrl, Alt, Del and still exists. But that means letting go of a controller or the mouse during gaming or a project. Faster access to any feature is a must-have for me.

Explorer patcher is a promising solution.

Am very tempted to try it out, just don't have time atm

Follow-up two years later: Yes, Explorer Patcher is our answer. We are able to resize the height of the taskbar, include the QLA, drag and drop files and programs to the QLA (shortcuts) or pin you most used programs to the Taskbar. Much more versatility than the Taskbar behavior currently (yes two years later) that is offered in Windows 11.
