Something that has been bugging me in Windows 11 is that text files are slow to open.
Traditionally, text files are super fast to open, but there is a noticeable delay when opening even the smallest of text files in Windows 11.
I think it is due to the new UWP Notepad app.

Is anyone else finding this? :think: :rolleyes:

nothing such issue on my side even DOCX / XLSX works fast too .. something not fine with the installation or hardware issue, try FRESH installation and make sure all related system drivers are up to date ..

I don't see any issues but that's on my rig and not yours. I also use Notepad++.
Edit: I also tried notepad and it's working just fine. 🤔

Normally all text files are instantly open. You might want to check with the task manager to rule out no app running in background that consumes too large memory or processor. Just to rule it out.

Yes, I have used Notepad++ before. I have never had trouble with it, but I prefer AkelPad as my text editor.
Apart from being a great text editor, it has numerous plugins.

I better default it in Windows 11.
Maybe that is why I am noticing the slowness of the new UWP Notepad.

This started happening a couple of months ago. I rarely use or access my txt files but find it annoying when it happens. Usually I am just quickly checking data in a doc.txt so it is particularly annoying, enough to upgrade with Windows 11 forum to research and comment. Was hoping to find a fix posted (other than loading yet another program to learn and open the door for more program harassment).

So much about 11 I dislike but not enough to go back. However it is beginning to build up and I might change my mind.

@MikeM, what are you using to look at txt files? I use Notepad and it still opens txt files instantly, like always.

Gary, I am using whatever came with Window 11. I only switched early this year hoping that all the bugs would be worked out and the worst of the "features" would have been removed or workarounds found. Unfortunately they keep adding garbage faster than it can be cleaned up. Not sure that text files (.txt) ever opened faster in my windows 11, I rarely check them and my memory is not so good anymore.

This whine is about a 12 word text file (content - index keywords) takes 10+ seconds to open on multiple tests. Used to pop open. It opens instantaneously in wordpad with "Open with". Just a couple of more clicks. I suspect that I can change the default program to Wordpad but am leery to take the effort because probably something else is broke now in Wordpad.

The actual version is Windows Notepad 11.2302.26.0. Looking this up I found that there is now an "App theme" and "Font" choice. Don't know why it is just supposed to be an ASCI text file.

@MikeM, I'm also using Notepad 11.2302.26.0. I checked several of my saved txt files and Notepad opens them all instantly. I have no explanation for what you're seeing with your text file.

This replaced my Linux Notebook. I've used Windows since V2, tried various Linux distros but Windows continues to win for me.
This solved my issue.
What i had to do was"in notepad". open the cog top right, scroll down to "when notepad starts" and change it to "open in a new window.
