The black screen of death is causing problems in terms of user recognition

Anyone else noticed that users now cannot recognize BSOD anymore?

With it being a black screen now, I am finding users are thinking its a windows update screen (because users don't read), but to be fair, when you look at it at first glance it does seem that way:

We had a production machine that was BSOD and we did not know because everyone thought it was windows updates, and it happened randomly enough to not affect the shows.

And of course the tool we have to monitor that did not flag it until it happened after 3 times. Just a little frustration. I hated the old sad face smiley, but at least it was obvious.

Granted, BSOD are not normal and should not be happening in the first place, but still I think this was a negative change.

Show BSOD details instead of the sad smiley in Windows 11 and 10

To enable BSOD details and disable the smiley in Windows 11/10, set DisplayParameters and DisableEmoticon DWORDs to 1 in the Registry.

I don't know if this will work with a Black screen of death.
I have no way to test, but I did follow the directions at the above link.

I haven't had a blue or black screen of death on Win 10 or Win 11... (knocks on wood).

If that is all it tells a user they should just not even have it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Unfortunately, I have to have it checked on production machines, some of these machines are in places without easy access, so having it restart automatically is a good thing. Especially because usually in most cases, when it happens it reboots and then is fine for awhile before it crashes again. Sometimes a day or two even. Not all BSOD are constant crashes that occur in loops. Pretty rare actually in my experience.

I will have to test if that works with the black screen of death, thanks
