the New Outlook email app??

Anybody have advice on how to stop the new outlook from crashing? It's not always, sometimes, scroll or click in the folders and it crashes. Can reopen it and it will do maybe two or three more times then stay steady until I close it and we have another go at it.

I have this issue with the old outlook and microsoft 365 apps on all my pc's for years.

Many times it just will not respond to a force close.

Extremely frustrating.

Sadly, New Outlook was deprecated after 2 months, then it was changed to Edge's app, like Netflix.
So basically Edge is crashing, thus you need to focus at that, like cleaning caches, cookies, etc.

I'm lost re your reply. Outlook (New Outlook) is still available via Microsoft Store. It does require WebView2 but not Edge.

If Windows still accommodates, try the following:

Try repairing or resetting Outlook New

• Try Repair first. If issues persist, proceed with Reset.
• Press Win + I to open Settings.
• Go to Apps > Installed apps.
• Scroll down or use the search bar to find Outlook (new).
• Click the three-dot menu next to Outlook and select Advanced options.
• Scroll down to the Reset section.
• Choose one of the following:
  • Repair – Attempts to fix the app without affecting your data.
  • Reset – Re-installs the app and may delete app data.
• Confirm your choice when prompted.

I don't have Outlook new so here is an image of MS Paint. It should be the same in Outlook New.

New Outlook existed for 2 months as a standalone app, it worked great, then MS changed it to a broken pathetic web app.

WebView2 essentially is Microsoft Edge. It uses the exact same Chromium rendering engine as the Edge browser to display web content.

I have used New Outlook for around a year, daily use on 6-7 Email Accounts, it has never crashed.
Edge is my default Web Browser. Both are up to date, there are no system mods to Windows.
It did get off to a bad start but now it has proven to be reliable for at least a year.

So I would start with the usual DISM and SFC checks, guides are on here in the tutorials.

Then go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Outlook > 3 dots > Advanced options > Reset/Repair/Re-install.

Do the same for any Edge related item, if they have those options.

Going back 25 years Outlook Express used the print engine of the then IE Web browser. There always has been shared modules in Windows and it's installed Apps. So modding can have unforeseen effects.

Yup... I did that. Thanks. But it didn't help with this problem.

The weird thing is it's not throwing any sort of errors into eventlogs.

Did that too... maybe like three times!

Well, after struggling around I found the logs Outlook generates, apparently for each session. After a crash it reports trying to load a WinApp 1.8 and fails, so "gracefully exits". Doesn't throw an error code into the eventlog though. Looking further it seems the system has some sort of AppX repository or deployment database corruption with at least one package that 'needs remediation' (that's why I did DISM/SFC cycle several times). So there's definitely problems there, I just don't know how to fix it and anything I've been able to turn up are suggestions that take me down a rabbit hole I don't want to go into (like disabling services, booting in safe mode/no network, renaming hidden/system AppX repository folders).

EDIT: OH yes, and I even updated GPU drivers because I read where WebView2 uses the GPU rather a lot. Not sure why it's needed for reading email, but there it is.

I'm wondering if just doing a Repair-Install with In-place Upgrade is the best. Or maybe just wait for 26H1 or 26H2, a major feature upgrade, to 'fix' it and put up with re-starting it several times before it sticks.

FWIW, this is a fairly old installation. Dates back to Win10 for sure, been updated/upgraded a lot to Win11Pro 25h2, 26200.8653. I don't use it that much either so it's missed a whole lot of update increments so mostly gets the roll-ups.

I checked for updates. The three red-dotted items did not need updating, they were apparently updated yesterday. Probably when I did the "repair" and/or "reset" in Settings/Installed Apps for Outlook? don't know.

What DID appear was an update for CoPilot. I let it update that figuring maybe it carries some dependency baggage in the update that Outlook needs too, or it simply re-registers things correctly. It posted but curiously, after finishing, it needed restarting and not in the usual 'friendly' way: it just popped to a screen that said it "ran into problems and needed to restart". Then did so.

It's restarted OK. We'll see if it helps Outlook any.

Exactly, mate. But you don't have to have Edge installed to use the Outlook app, they aren't dependedn't at all.

I did reinstall webview2 at some point in this process. And I considered clean install but I'm stubborn since it still worked well in everything else and fairly clean eventlogs. I did perform an inplace repair with upgrade.

But, I decided to give chatgpt a go. Yes, everyone hates on it. It took me through a lot of explorations down several rabbit holes to try and find what was corrupted. It was a long grueling process but eventually we got to the problem: it had me re-register WinUI/XAML and that fixed it.

People can hate on it all they want and maybe it was pointlessly meticulous but I would NEVER in a million years have arrived at this. Everything was pointing to a problem with the AppX UI framework or StateRepository being corrupted but every possible "fix" for that (including some that required safe boots to implement) were fruitless. I'm 100% confident NO level 2 help desk tech would have worked with me patiently enough to get there either. And remember: whether ChatGPT or an L2 help desk tech they have the same weakness trying to fix this: me, constantly mixing things up and adding unrelated bits of information to screw up the process along the way. ChatGPT takes it in stride, separates the wheat from the chaff but brings it back in if it becomes suddenly relevant. L2 techs tune me out and that's dangerous 'cause I'm the one with eyes on the problem.

One thing I can say: the damned AI is so 'personable' you forget it's just a stupid machine. DO NOT assume it maintains proper context throughout a long session! I had to constantly remind it I'm on 25H2, Win11Pro, fully updated so it wouldn't fall back to an earlier versions or even edition that implement these things differently.

I've used Outlook (Classic) for decades and stayed with it. @antspants, didn't you stay with Outlook (Classic) too?

I don't know how this works I guess. As I understand it, you need an Office subscription or one of the enduring licenses to use Outlook Classic. I would use it if I could but I won't get Office in any flavor.

And I won't use anything that doesn't get updates along with Windows. That's bad enough but at least I won't be screwed like I was when I had to drop the Outlook that came with my Office2010 license that was supposed to last 'forever' but 'screw you sucker'. There's nothing magic about email, not for me: I'm not a corporation with security, data integrity, office automation and business record retention problems. A simple package like New Outlook would be fine: if it f'n works right.

Outlook (Classic) requires either a Microsoft 365 subscription with desktop apps or a perpetual Office license, as it’s no longer available as a free standalone download.
