OS
Windows 11
Just came across this article. The first option is interesting - and so is the second. It seems with the second one, that disconnecting from the internet does work - if you do it at the right time (maybe turn off the router before starting). Has anyone tried either of these methods? The third one seems too fiddly to me. This is for Windows 11 Home, not Pro.

Whenever I do a clean install of Windows I do it with my router turned off and without any non-essential devices connected. This method will result in the creation of a Local Account.

However, if you want to start personalising your build, you will have to login to your MS Account.

Just came across this article.
That article is dated June 19, 2021. A lot of what it says is out of date now, in particular the bit about disconnecting from the internet. Microsoft has closed a lot of the loopholes for Home since the Insider build that was available back then, they no longer work for the Release version.

Brink's tutorial has all the current known methods for installing Home with a local account.

That does not work for installing Windows 11 Home. It requires an internet connection and won't let you get past the 'Lets get you connected...' screen until you are connected. Only 11 Pro offers to option to 'continue with limited setup'.

I like the In-Place upgrade method. Do a clean install of Win 10 with no internet connected... make a local/admin account.
Then just do an In-Place upgrade. Even on Home it carries the local/admin account to Win 11.

And if you install your programs while on Win 10... it carries them to Win 11 as well.
Why fight with Windows 11, if you don't have to?

I know it works... I did it my self on Home, after Oct 5th.

I can confirm that an in-place upgrade of 10 Home will continue to use just the existing local account(s). That's how my System One got its Windows 11. But why do two installs when one will do? From Brink's tutorial....

If installing a Windows 11 Home edition and you currently do not have an Internet connection available, press the Shift + F10 keys to open a command prompt. Copy and paste the taskkill /F /IM oobenetworkconnectionflow.exe command into the command prompt, and press Enter. Close the command prompt, and continue at step 21D to set up a local account.

If you clean install Windows 11 Home, make sure you have your LAN cable disconnected. If you only have Wi-Fi, then DO NOT connect when presented with the available Wi-Fi networks. At this point, in Window 11 Pro there is a text "I don't have internet connection" and you click that to proceed. In Windows 11 Home this text is hidden, so you normally cannot bypass it. Don't worry, just press ALT+F4 to close the network list and proceed. In Windows 11 Pro the computer restarts and presents you again with the network list. Clicking again on the text "I don't have an internet connection" lets you create a local account. If asked again in Windows 11 Home, simply close the window (ALT+F4) again to proceed. Do not connect to the internet until the OOBE (out of the box experience) stage has been completed and you see the desktop, to avoid any nasty surprises. Be careful when first using a Microsoft account (such as when downloading your first app from Windows Store) not to convert your local account to Microsoft! There is an option to use your Microsoft account only for Store, not in general.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Didn't know that detail... So you either install Windows 10 Home (or an older Windows 11 Home build) with local account and upgrade to latest Windows 11 build, or you use a Microsoft account which you can then convert to local account.

I have another idea, but not sure if that works. Provided your computer doesn't have the Windows 8/10/11 Home key in UEFI firmware (BIOS), when you clean install Windows 11 click "I do not have a key" and select to install the Windows 11 Pro version. After you complete installation with a local account, go to Settings, Activation, and put your Windows 7/8/10/11 Home key to activate Home version instead. If the key is not accepted there because you have installed Pro, right-click on the start button and open a Windows Terminal as Administrator. Type this command to force your Home key:

slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

You substitude xxxxx... with your Home key (including the dashes).

When you go at Settings, Activation again you should see now you have the Home version and you should be able to activate.

It is easy to upgrade from Home to Pro, but more difficult (as in MS don't provide an official method) to downgrade from Pro to Home. Brink as always has a tutorial for that (at least, for W10 - should work in W11 too).

...a direct downgrade from Windows 10 Pro, Education, or Enterprise to Windows 10 Home is not supported, and would normally require a clean install of Windows 10 Home and the loss of all your data.

This tutorial will show you how to downgrade from the Windows 10 Pro, Education, or Enterprise edition to the Windows 10 Home edition without any data loss.

But why bother when it is so easy to bypass the requirement for W11 Home to connect at that point in the OoBE, as Brink say in the tutorial?

If installing a Windows 11 Home edition and you currently do not have an Internet connection available, press the Shift + F10 keys to open a command prompt. Copy and paste the taskkill /F /IM oobenetworkconnectionflow.exe command into the command prompt, and press Enter. Close the command prompt, and continue at step 21D to set up a local account.

When I was resetting my computer back to a "clean" install of 11 home, when I continued with wifi on accident I figured out how to get around it. I saw a lot of people going through this method suggest pressing shift+f10 to get command prompt to open, then you can type control to get to the control panel and temporarily disable your wifi. That didn't work for me but shift+fn+f10 worked. If you're trying to use the command prompt method and you can't get it to open, you may have to add the fn key to the combo to work. Btw I'm certain I did try the taskkill command and typed it right but it gave me an error.

I meant to sign in or create a new Microsoft account and when finally on the desktop convert this account to local. Not convenient, but it can be done. Anyway, I hardly use the Home version, I prefer Pro, so I don't have these limitations. We can purchase a Windows 10/11 key for as low as 40€, so why bother with Home?

I meant to sign in or create a new Microsoft account and when finally on the desktop convert this account to local.
If you want to have a free choice of the name for the user folder it is best to create the local account at the beginning. Using an MS account means the name of the user folder will be the first five characters of your email address.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Actually, I removed OneDrive completely from all my machines, and I don't want any syncing done by MS, since Google does more than enough syncing for my needs, so I never sign in with my MSA, but Kari's tutorial was valuable for me becvause I learned a few things from it, and I saw, for the very first time (in one of his images), the option in the lower left corner. I think that's the option spap was talking about. @spapakons : correct me if I'm wrong, please.
