There is a custom kernel for Windows 98 that adds Windows 2000 and XP compatibility. You can attempt to run an application that normally requires Windows XP in 98 by changing the Compatibility to Windows XP (right-click on the shortcut, Properties, Compatibility).

You will never achieve the speed that X-Lite gives you. You can image your existing setup, try X-Lite and, if you are not impressed, you can restore from your image backup. Why not try it when you have a spare half hour?

. I have it installed and I'm with you. Runs fast and works great. Updates work. And I can add what I want. You can't do this uninstalling from the standard build. 
Yes. They give you a choice if you want to install Windows Defender or not and you update through Windows Update. You update the packs through Windows Update as normal. You can use Windows theme packs as normal. It's all pretty esay once you get it installed and start playing with it.

It's not included but you can add it.
It's safe and you can add Defender. It's an option.
