Solved Tor - Where to Put userChrome.css?

I'm using Tor portable and want to use a userChrome.css file. I copied the file from my Firefox folder, but can't get it to work in Tor.

I've tried these folders:
Tor Portable\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Browser\profile.default
Tor Portable\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Browser\profile.default\chrome

Profile.default is the only profile name, so it is the default profile.

Any ideas?

The TOR project doesn't support these types of modifications because apparently some modifications made to userChrome.css can affect your fingerprint.

That’s not to say that you can’t physically do it, I am just saying it isn’t looked upon as a smart idea. I mention this because I have been hard stretched trying to find an answer on the TOR project forum. (Maybe they remove reference to achieving it?)

Having said all that, there are conflicting thoughts (On reddit for instance). But again, I haven’t had any luck with definitive answers as to where to put it.

If it’s anything like chrome, one would assume it should just reside nakedly in the User Profile folder for the current default profile.

And just as an FYI


I haven’t finished looking, but it hasn’t been an answer that is just there for the taking, as you may have discovered yourself?

In Firefox you have to make a change in about:config, so that Firefox knows to read the userChrome.css file.

That’s how I understand it also, not great support on the TOR forum for touching anything in the about:config settings

Thank you for your replies. I did another search and found the item to be changed in about:config : toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets, which had to change from false to true. I'm a long time user of Mozilla/SeaMonkey/Firefox and don't remember having to make this change in the past.

In Firefox you'll have to change that too. But it's a long ime ago they changed it, probably about 2018.

I put it in my user.js file, so that in a new installation the userChrome always is enabled at start.

// Activate userChrome.css:
user_pref("toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets", true);

I can’t help but believe some of the stuff I have read, explaining that this is affecting the Footprint of TOR. Which seems to contradict the whole purpose of TOR?

Just install TOR browser -- why do you need to mess about with anything else . Tor installs just perfectly OK on even the latest versions of W11 and is 100% legal in pretty well everywhere.
