Well that's pretty nice of Microsoft.
They come out with another over the top, useless thing in Windows 11 and they are nice enough to make it so, if you wisely, turn it off, then you won't be able to turn it back on. I wish they would do that with a few other things in Windows 11. :D


Things like the new START Menu, the new context menus, the new File Explorer missing ribbon bar, etc.
I wish they'd give those things a perma-OFF switch too.


Seriously though... this Smart App Control is just their newest way to attempt to control 3rd party software.
If the 3rd party software devs don't pay off MS... their programs won't get "signed" (approved), by Microsoft,
and will then be blocked by Smart App Control.


They already tried something similar with Windows Defender, but people saw through that. :)

From what I have read, you only need to do a fresh install if your want to use smart app control. I expect it probably doesn't add much so no big deal. Stupid approach though in denying you a protection feature for downloading apps if you might already have vulnerable apps. Brilliant thinking.

I have my own brains to decide which app is dangerous for my system and which is not. I don't want any automatic blocking of apps or drivers or whatever they might think of to stop me running Windows 11 on my unsupported PC (see 2nd system specs).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I usually disable and not mess with features I don't need. Especially if they compromise compatibility! I hate "legacy free" tricks, I prefer all my old devices and apps still work.

Just saying, I upgraded my eligible Dell laptop to Win 11 several months ago and I can't even access Smart App Control. I'm fine with it. Now for the other system still on Windows 10, it's staying there as long as the PC is still running.

As I understand Smart App Control is not available in standard release v21H2. It will be available in v22H2 in October 2022. It is available in the Insider's Preview builds only at the moment. Nothing important for me, I don't feel like I miss it.
