Solved Trouble installing Windows updates after CPU and OS upgrades

I just upgraded my cpu recently from a Ryzen 5 1400 to a Ryzen 5 5600 and upgraded to windows 11. It gave me 22H2 at first but then upgraded again a few days later to 23H2. Now when the most recent batch of updates came down, they get to about 95% installed and then it says "Something didn't go as planned no need to worry undoing changes" I've tried several times ti get these updates but every time I get the same result. This is what event viewer says "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922"
What I've tried so far is clearing up the windows update service using the command line and then trying again no luck
I ran disk cleanup to remove old windows update files no luck. I just thought I'd check here if anyone has any idea how to resolve this before I cave and reinstall windows or just ignore updates altogether.

Yes it said I had no integrity violations. It went by suspiciously quick though compared to when I ran it in the past for other reasons.

Presumably you have a BIOS version, in your unnamed motherboard, that's sufficiently up-to-date to fully support the newer CPU.

In the end, you may have to resort to a clean install. Good luck.

The motherboard is an asrock AB350 PRO4 running P7.40 bios from 10/27/2022 Full support for Vermeer 5000 series Ryzen. If I were to put the r5 1400 back in there might be problems.

There's a 2023/2/15 BIOS for your motherboard. It's... L8.02

Since you're on ElevenForum, I assume you enabled AMD fTPM and Secure Boot in the BIOS?

When I updated to bios 7.0 it forced ftpm enabled. It gave a message about it. That newest bios is just for AMD AM4 AGESA Combo V2 PI 1.2.0.8 which I assume is support for more processors.

It's also support for things MS and AMD are doing about security. Like things to prevent bootkit infections.
There's a topic about this somewhere. It's been at least a year since it was posted.

On an older motherboard like that, I would seriously consider just doing a clean install of Windows 11, rather than "upgrading".

There's also this... which will solve "most" Windows issues...

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software


Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
Macrium Reflect
AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)


Get the Windows 11 ISO (Option #2), and save it to your desktop...


Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.



If this can't fix the issue, then it may be a driver or 3rd party program, problem.

Generally, we do things in this order...

sfc /scannow ...then Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth


If neither of those fix the problem... then we try an In-Place Upgrade (repair install) see above.

Possible causes for error 0x800F0922... and it sounds like you've checked most of them...

The update error can block you from installing cumulative updates, quality updates, security updates, and feature updates. It is mainly caused by corrupt system files, malicious antivirus program intervention, deactivated .NET Framework components or connection problems, corrupted update components, and more.

I would check that your .NET Framework is 4.8 or above, and make sure you don't have a 3rd party antivirus causing the problems.


You might also want to update your chipset driver. ^^




If "nothing" mentioned in this topic fixes the problem... then you should probably just do a clean install of Windows 11.

For P7.40: "ASRock do NOT recommend updating this BIOS if you are going to use Pinnacle, Raven or Summit Ridge CPU on your system"

(The Ryzen 5 1400 is Summit Ridge.) The same is true of more recent BIOSes.

The suggestion to try an upgrade (in place or otherwise) from an ISO is a good one, although I strongly recommend imaging your current OS drive before proceeding. I've never had an up-grade-in-place messing things up much, but it's still what I regard as a major modification of the OS.

Microsoft seems to have given up testing things like updates, before they release them.

I'm now on 8.02 bios but the issue still persists. One of the updates appears to have gone through the .net framework update is no longer listed so it looks like that one worked out the comulative update still rolls back.

I checked my laptop out of curiosity and it got those updates no problem

As for backing up, technically I'm not experiencing any problems right now. When it comes to backup software I do occasionally use macrium but I don't have a drive that is the size of my C drive to make the backup in the first place. Theoretically I could just hide the update and move on. I was just concerned about something getting messed up because I don't see that things got screwed up we're rolling back message.

That's gonna have to be a choice you make.
Only thing I can say, it that right now... it's only ONE update you have problems with. It might be easier to troubleshoot and fix the problem now... while it's still small.

Microsoft is already talking about making some major changes in April 2024.




There WAS one update for Windows 10, that we did recommend that people just hide. It was this one...


The reason we recommended that was that the update was pretty much incomplete, and should never have been released.
Microsoft promised they would release a fix for it. We're still waiting.

I've noticed SFC does run fast directly after a new install but slower after having been in use for awhile and programs added, etc.

Have you checked your CBS log(s) under %systemroot%\Logs\CBS? It's where most of the errors associated with Windows Update are written.

I looked but I don't understand any of it.

Could you please upload them and I'll check? You'll need to place them in .zip folder before attaching them because they'll be too large.

you want the whole folder or just the CBS.log?

The entire folder: all of them including the ones which have *persist in their name.

I just did what another person mentioned and did a repair install using a windows install iso. This is all that is in the folder now. I checked for updates a few times it did a few unrelated ones now it says I'm up to date. I've rechecked several times and it still says up to date. I'm not sure if this perticular update installed or if it's being excluded now. So there's some hope I may not have to reinstall windows but we'll see
