Troubleshooting Small Amazon Basics Speakers Connectivity Issue

Small but difficult (for me at least) I have a pair of the small Amazon Basics speakers which are driven from a USB port. They used to work! Now,the speakers light up when plugged into a USB port, but I can't get music to them. I've spent half a day struggling with this so I thought someone here might have a solution or road map. My desktop system is powered by a NUC, and I can get wifi and bluetooth to work. No other external speakers. Thanks for any ideas
