Trying to figure out a unexpected crash/shutdown during idle

The laptop was idling with the lid closed, and based on the ambient light, it appeared to be fully charged. No recent updates or changes made.


DESKTOP-A8ITQKD-(2026-08-15_22-02-06).zip

Please perform the following steps:





1) Add WMIC:

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:WMIC~~~~






2) Run Tuneup plus > post a share link








3) The BIOS Version/Date LENOVO N3YET82W (1.47 ), 12/10/2025

Upgrade the BIOS: 1.47 > 1.50






4) Enable regback:






5) Reinstall: IntcBTAu.sys

3) For any new BSODs after completing the steps in post #2 > post a new V2 share link into the newest post

1. This was already added as part of the earlier troubleshooting.

3.Updated BIOS to 1.50, along with a few other available updates.
4. Enabled automatic regback
5. Downloaded the latest version of "IntelSST"
6. Do I need to follow this step if System Restore is already enabled?


Second V2 run DESKTOP-A8ITQKD-(2026-08-17_08-36-30).zip

There's something I noticed today, using Hwinfo to gauge the cpu temp, saw a recorded max temp was 100°C. I ended up opening it up cleaned out the fans, to my surprise there wasn't much of a build up, but it was dusty.

I noticed the current temp was hovering around 61°C but unplugging the charge gave me a better reading, it does seem to get warm when it charging .

As for the laptop, it's only a year and a half old, does thermal repasting even make sense at this stage?

Just 1 error is a test fail and testing can be aborted.

The more the passes the better the testing conditions.

It sometimes takes passes into the 20's to detect malfunctioning RAM.

I'll answer that one. I have seen devices, both PC and laptop, right out of the box, where the paste is hard or misapplied. Manufacturers do not always use high quality paste either. You don't know until you actually look at it.
The max operating temp on that CPU is 110 °C. It should not get anywhere close to that temp when idling.

IF it's "do nothing", that's a very dangerous thing to do when using a modern standby device.
That page also explains the other power settings for a laptop if you click on the subjects on the left side of the page.

Modern standby is a whole new breed of power management.

Just FYI-To anyone answering this thread, cross reference this thread with this one from another user. Same CPU, same brand, same problem. Issue may or may not be connected.

That's true, I wouldn't be surprised if this a common issue. Given the X1C is still under warranty, and the process for repasting thermal on it looks tricky with several pads placed on top. Though, I have done repasting before on my older laptop and PC and it's fairly simple.


This is just my observation, I could be wrong here, but the max temp reading seems way off. Suppose, it comes out of sleep, the temp fluctuates a lot, spikes and drops again, but after a few minutes it stabilizes and reads normal. Regardless, it has thermal throttling issue

Yeah, it's indeed a new breed. the whole modern standby thing is a bit silly. I learned a valuable lesson from the post you provided earlier.

Memtest86+ can take 24 to 48 hrs for 8 or more passes on 32GB RAM.

Okay, I believe last time I did about 11 passes.
