This is somewhat of a complicated problem. I have an older Ipad that I am trying to resurrect. When I start it, I am prompted to select a wifi network. I select my home wifi system and enter the password. It gets rejected. I try other, older passwords for my wifi system. Nothing. What I need: how to find the password (not reset it) or how to bypass this request on the Ipad.

Can't you connect using the WPS button? Or is not supported?
What is the name of your Comcast router?

Depending on the age of the ipad, it might not support the encryption methods or bands / Protocols the router accepts.

Use your phone as a hotspot, as you can more easily adjust that to work for older devices.

Comcast.net admin/pass is not the same as a router admin/pass
Xfinity router (comcast preferred router) defaults are usually user: admin pass: password unless you changed them, which you probably would have.

What good would router security be if you could do this easily?

I suspect Andrew may be correct, but having said that, I am typing on a 1st Gen iPad pro from 2015, without network issues.

I’d start with a router reset and a password you remember, at least to test the issue.

Do you have a Windows 11 PC connected to this WiFi network? If so, you can get it to show you the password in plain text, it will even give you a QR code to scan with a phone or iPad to connect.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

You can view password in the app or gateway.
Myself I would just reset the gateway and stop wasting time with this.
Does not take very long to setup the gateway.

Also, Comcast has starting shutting down access to the gateway through the gateway IP which is normally 10.0.0.1 and you have to use the Admin tool or the app to access the gateway settings. (Tool explained at the link)

yeah if its a newer xfinity router, they have support for 6ghz wifi as well as wpa3. They set them up with that horrible auto switcher where its one wifi name and it gives each device whatever band it thinks it needs. It usually guesses wrong. Which might be the issue.

Separating the bands is usually best, but it's not for the non techy user to do. If there is an option for smart connect or smart switching or similar wording though, might be easy to disable.

It might also be using wpa3 by default, which older ipads would not support. You should be able to change it to a mixed environment of wpa2 and wpa3 however.

Apple confirms that all iPad models from the 5th generation and later support wpa 3. So depending on the ipad if its older than that, there is your answer. Might also need to update the ipad as well to a certain software version for support. You can take it to the apple store and they will help you update it if you need help. My advice is to throw out their junk and get your own modem and router. But thats just me. Non tech savvy people better to stick with their stuff.
