In Win 10 I can use a regedit to temporarily do this and then regedit it back. I've heard Win11 doesn't allow this. is there a workaround or new regedit?

Take a look at the "In Closing" part of this article:

Quick summary: There isn't that option as of yet. Maybe later this option would get implemented.

That's if someone else can find some Registry Editor modification that actually exists out there.
I tried looking around in search results, but wasn't able to find anything.

Fortunately I have a Win 10 computer and it works fine with that regedit

Thanks

The setting works the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It's part of the XP/Vista view mode (enabled via folder fflags registry entries) and will allow arbitrary arranging of items in Details and Icons views. However, that arrangement is temporary. When you close and reopen the folder, the items will be arranged by Name (or Date or whatever is set).

The manual arrangement will only stick if are using Windows 7, Windows 8.x, or a Windows 10 build that is lower than 1703.

The easy way to see this for yourself is to enable/disable the XP/Vista view mode settings using WinSetView. All of this is explained in the WinSetView manual.
