Personalization Turn On or Off Show Accent Color on Title Bars and Windows Borders in Windows 11

  • Staff
Colors_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off show accent color on title bars and windows borders for your account in Windows 11.

Windows 11 gives you the option to personalize the color and accent color of a variety of surfaces you see when you use Windows.

You can personalize the colors that appear in Windows and your apps by setting the mode to Dark, Light, or Custom.

The Dark mode has a darker set of colors and is designed to work well in a low-lit environment.

The Light mode setting has a lighter color scheme across the Start menu, taskbar, Quick Settings, and notification center. It works well during daylight hours. If you choose the Light mode, you’ll be able to show an accent color for window title bars and borders. You won’t have the option to personalize the color of the Start menu and taskbar (that option is only available for Dark and Custom modes).

The Custom mode gives you more options somewhere in between light and dark. You can choose an accent color or have Windows select one (the accent color will provide a contrast with or match your wallpaper and Windows color). You can also show an accent color for window title bars (the horizontal bar at the top of a window) and borders. Play around with the colors and modes to see which ones work best for you.

You can select to show or not show the accent color on the title bars and windows borders of active windows.

Hi @Brink

Is it possible to turn it on just for "Borders" (not "Title bars")?
With an app we could do that in Win 10:

"Winaero Tweaker" has an option "Colored Title Bars" (disable colored title bars) but it works on Win 10.

Possibly with some 3rd party software.

Hello mate, :alien:

It appears the new File Explorer with tabs does not use this yet.

Microsoft brings to mind the old technicians joke... "If we can't fix it, it ain't broke".
But when they say it, it's more like... "If it ain't broke, we can't deal with that". :D

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I have WIN11. I tried to get the accent color on the File Explorer title bar without using a theme, but it doesn't work properly eventhough I selected to show on title bars. It will randomly display the accent color on different days and times. I noticed the accent color works consistently on a preset theme, but I don't like the choices; therefore, I customized a one so that I could get the accent color on the File Explorer title bar. All seems fine until I reboot, then the File Explorer title bar color reverts to grey. I have resorted to selecting SLEEP instead of SHUTDOWN or RESTART when not using the laptop in order to retain my custom settings without needing to reconfigure at every reboot.

Hello, :alien:

Unfortunately, the new File Explorer (without ribbon) can no longer have its title bar color changed with the accent color.

You could test using option two below for File Explorer with ribbon.

I customized a theme, background and accent color as my chosen color, saved as a custom theme, and I select SLEEP each night to retain the settings. No other choice. I will reconfigure again when I need to shutdown or restart.

I wrote a batch script which applies any theme file; you can run it as a logon task after every reboot/boot.

1. Save this batch file to any folder.
2. Open CMD window as Administrator.
3. Run this command to create a logon task (replace the new path of SetTheme.bat and your personal theme file).
Code:
schtasks /create /sc ONLOGON /tn ReapplyTheme /tr "C:\Users\GARLIN\path\SetTheme.bat C:\Users\GARLIN\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\Custom.theme" /f

You will see a few windows briefly pop-up -- this is normal. Since you're re-applying the same theme, there shouldn't be much visual difference except for the accent color.

To remove the logon task, run:
Code:
schtasks /delete /tn ReapplyTheme

After searching for a resolve since last Oct, I found if I open and close regedit at startup, make no changes, my File Explorer title bar will display the accent color I have chosen in Personalizrition!

I found a resolve! Use own downloaded picture. It uses the a color from the picture for the File Explorer Title Bar accent color! I came across this by accident, no idea why I didn't try it before. I guess I assumed if choosing a solid color or customizing a theme didn't work then why would using my downloaded picture work. I was sent a photo from a friend and selected it to use a background. I saw it also automatically changes the title bar color to a lighter shade than a color in the photo (same result as when selecting a built-in Theme). I shutdown/restart and the settings saved. To further test, I found a picture I like, saved it to my computer, went into Personalization, choose the picture for background, I chose a manual accent color to a color that I like. I saved it as a Theme. I can also switch from Custom/Dark/Light to Custom/Light/Light (toggles show accent color on start and taskbar) if I don't want the darker taskbar. I can now shutdown and retain these settings. Still baffled why my own selected picture works and not when choosing a solid background from the Windows color choices menu or when customizing a built-in Theme. LOL. I am persistent and tenacious! However, I still don't know why the accent color is random when I select to use a solid background and a manual color where I need to open/close regedit to force it! But this resolve works, I can change my own pictures and the accent color works.

Explorer doesn't support accent colour (or colourized title bar). It only gets the Mica effect. Colourized title bar is on the way!
Mica = A blurry, semi transparent version of background on the Explorer title bar:

Whatever theme/mode (light, dark), colour, accent colour you have chosen:
Lighter Background = Lighter Explorer Title Bar
Darker Background = Darker Explorer Title Bar

It takes some playing with different settings to get a desired display view. I used #C239B3 and the colors are different shades of that color on Start/Task, File Explorer title bar, and browser bar. I tried choosing a different color manually but it only changes the browser bar, not start/taskbar or file explorer. I am deciding if I want to have a dark or light taskbar. At least now I have the File Explorer Title Bar accent color at startup and no need to force it with regedit or wait until it finally displays.

About the browser, in Edge/Chrome (I'm not on Chrome, but I'm sure it has the same behaviour as Edge), you can change the theme to Light/Dark (Settings>Appearance). By changing the accent colour, Edge doesn't follow the Windows accent colour (SS below).

Colourized title bar only appears in Win32 apps, like VLC (SS below, my accent colour is dark blue on the VLC title bar), not in UWP apps (like Notepad and new Paint...).

IMO, don't play with Registry and wait till MS implement this feature (colourized title bar on UWP apps). I have been waiting for it more than six months ago!

This is my current colors with my own picture for the background and I chose a manual accent color. I saved the settings as a theme and selected to use it. The File Explorer title bar picks up a shade of color from the background picture and not the chosen accent color in settings, if I use a picture with blue it will be a shade of blue. The Start and Taskbar are from the Accent Color choices. I chose Orchid Light and this is the result. Again, if I choose any other color it will be that color in Start and Taskbar displaying different shades. I am happy with the results.
