Turning off email notifications and sound

New install of Win 11 Pro, 24H2. I've followed every set of directions I can find to turn off virtually all notifications and definitely all sounds, and have succeeded except for email: with every one there's a pop up in the right side of the taskbar, with a chime. Is it possible? I could live with the popup if forced to, but the chime has to go. Thanks,

What email program/client? Sometimes the sound/notification setting is in the program, not in the Windows settings

Popups like you describe often/always contain a settings option icon (3 dots) > Turn off all notifications?

Sylpheed. Never occured in Win 10 and back when I turned off sounds. I don't recall it occur during the couple of days earlier this week when I had the initial in-place 10 to 11 working.

I take it you're not using it (it=Sylpheed). To each their own.

Not sure how that is possible when Windows 11 is actually notifiying you of mail. If Windows recognises Sylpheed to notify you, then it should be listed somewhere if you follow that tutorial.

Also, thoroughly check the Sylpheed settings.

Ooops, sorry, my bad. Sylpheed. I knew that

Rather an obscure and uncommon piece of software. Last maintenance upgrade recorded as 10/2023 (given changes in technology, I doubt it's that perfect not to require any update in 2 years). Very retro-GUI

Anyway, I suspect the sound and popup options are software related, not Windows. Best to seek advise from the distributors

I've been using Sylpheed (Win32 version) since Nov 2005 and participated or followed the email discussions of the Sylpheed group the whole time, as well as gone through all the the possibilities and documentation (and just did again). The term "sound" or anything similar has NEVER come up. Because with each new Windows version I go through the Sound dialogue and turn off each and every last one that are on by default, it's never been an issue until now (perhaps except before sounds were turned off). And popups for email, never (at the most, the Sylpheed icon in the Notification area, usually on the Quick Launch toolbar, might blink a bit when there was new email, or show a number, but that's it.

This looks like a Windows issue.

No. Never heard of it before. What is it in the IT world? I use Sylpheed as simply as I can, double clicking on the textHTML version sometimes.

Just something I read on the page for your email client re notifications

And with this, I'm gone. All too convenient when using what appears to be a no longer supported, and outdated, software with developing editions of an operating system, to blame the OS for the faults of the software.

I'm no Microsoft fan-boi by far, but I do think there are limits where Windows can't be blamed for the shortcomings elsewhere

The problem may well be Windows and it's a known issue, according to MS Support: some apps, especially older or non-UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps, do not register themselves properly with Windows' notification system.

But it's apparently not just older apps. Under System>Notifications, go to "Notifications from apps and other senders." Compare the list of apps showing there with what you have on your computer. If it's like mine, the good majority of programs and apps I have installed, virtually all current, are not showing there. Even between my desktop and laptop, the app lists are inconsistent. And btw, in Sylpheed configuration, notifications and sounds have been unchecked forever.
