Two graphic chips & how to use them ?

I ordered a custom built AIO from HP with the Intel 770 as Integrated graphics and an Nvidia GeForce MX450 as an option. They are both enabled in Device Manager.

If I enable / disable each and run them independently of each other the Intel built in seems faster. I haven’t made any effort to make adjustments to see if I can speed up the Nvidia.

Naturally HP Tech Support hasn’t a clue no matter what I ask them. They claim you can’t have both in the same machine “because there’s only one slot”.

Can anyone shed any light on how the machine is selecting which one to use? I see that I can specify one vs. the other globally and for each program in the Nvidia driver but it seems to make little if any difference.

BTW – This machine was ordered and shipped with wireless charging in the base and it isn’t in the BIOS. It may go back and I’m wondering whether to order the Nvidia again. Its $89 + $5 for a 180 watt PS.

MX450 is a tad faster than UHD770 in most workloads...not all, but most. In some workloads it is over twice as fast. Especially when doing stuff that require fast memory. MX450 has dedicated VRAM, while UHD770 use shared RAM. In certain workloads it is much better to use the MX450 for better balance, when CPU and GPU load is high. High CPU and GPU load heat up the CPU, which slows down the CPU extra much if using UHD770. Since mx450 is a separate chip, you won't be affected as much.

What comes to which GPU to use, you can select this in the nvidia control panel, either individually for each app/game or prefer mx450 for any 3D workload, or the other way around.

Using UHD770 will conserve battery life, so that would be useful when unplugged.

They posted that it's an AIO. HP must have made some changes to their AIO computers. The one my wife had didn't have a slot to install another graphics card.

mx450 is an onboard chip...basically this AIO is a laptop built into a screen.

UHD770 doesnt use a slot? Its cpu graphics..mx450 also doesnt use a gpu slot since its a chip and not a card.

On customizable AIO's you can get an NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated) for something like $189 upcharge. I adjusted the Nvidia driver and ran a video and saw the Nvidia chip being utilized as in the screenshot. I was surprised to see any activity on the Intel chip.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with this AIO except they screwed up with the wireless charging base and I'm working with them to replace it. They may have to offer me an off the shelf unit with the GTX 1650 chip.

the mx450 actually use the same chip as the gtx 1650 but with a reduced memory bus to 64bit.

There you can manually modify how Windows assign graphics power to individual apps and add new ones, if not listed .

Windows use power efficiency coherence to assign each GPU a task. Meaning, if it is less power hungry, will try to save energy by selecting the less power demanding GPU to solve the task. This process is fully automatic. You can either assign certain apps to certain GPU or fully disable one of them, in device manager if it makes you feel better.

You may achieve the same, using nVidia control panel

You may be 100% correct. I just know that there was no way my wife (or to be more correct, I) I could have added an extra video card internally.

There doesn't seem to be a readily perceptible performance difference between the GeForce MX450 and the UHD770. Is there any particular program where I'd see a difference ? This is not used for gaming. The Intel built in graphic ability seems to be OK.

Surprising. The MX450 is supposed to be greatly superior to the UHD 770. GeForce MX450 vs Intel UHD Graphics 770 [videocardbenchmark.net] by PassMark Software

Edit, later: The difference would appear in GPU intensive applications. That doesn't include just displaying the desktop, Web browsing, etc.

You won't notice any difference between the two cards in most applications. Only in games and in 3D CAD software or similar and in high resolution video encoding or decoding.

The UHD770 is capable enough for most scenarios.

Without going too deeply, and I believe I'm right, the dedicated GPU works through the onboard GPU. If you lose the onboard graphics then the dedicated GPU won't work.
Windows has the control over the GPUs not the Nvidia control panel.
