OS
Win11 26100.3323
I have two sys files that I want to delete as they have been left over by some software that I have uninstalled, but I am unable to delete them or the directory they reside in.

The files reside in;

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hantek6022be.inf_amd64_70a4a90bdfab9c4d\

When I try to delete them I am told I need system permissions which I can see on the file permissions and I have taken ownership of the directory as Administrator and propagated this down, but I can't add Administrator permissions to give me full control to allow me to delete the directory (including the sys files.

I cannot delete the registry keys for this install either

Can anyone suggest a way to delete these files and the directory?

Thanks

Boot in safe mode, and see if you can delete them.

If not boot in WinPE mode and you can delete them from a command prompt.

I actually boot into the Macrium Reflect Winpe mode, and use its file explorer to delete such stubborn files. I rarely bother messing with deleting from registry as it has no impact.

For those who want to make Macrium Winpe mode - from Macrium create rescue media and in the options choose the PE variation not the RE one. It will prompt for permission to download a chunk from Ms -- It's OK. Then create a bootable usb stick, or bootable iso on your computer. When you boot into it you should see the console icon at the bottom on the taskbar. -- it's already in admin mode.

This is incorrect. If you create a WinRE rescue disk, you are still in admin mode (more accurately admin mode has no meaning) and have the icons. I never use WinPE anymore.

Hi there
Well if its changed - that's great news -- thanks for the info. I'm sure I never got the console icon before I changed to the PE version of Macrium - so I stand corrected.

Perfect, and a useful bit of knowledge about getting into PE, it hadn't occurred to me to use Macrium to get there!

I have now managed to set up Core Isolation (Core isolation) which is what I was trying to do in the first place ;-)

Thanks Again

I boot into a Linux Mint distro from a usb drive for such cases as yours. It's also an excellent method for recovering files from old hard drives where permissions interfere. I've found all kinds of uses having a full OS at my disposal.

Download RAPR and try to delete them there, if no go, try the force delete option

Also if Lockhunter still works in 11, you can right click the file and choose delete. If it can't delete it, you can choose to delete on reboot

Nothing has changed - Macrium Reflect WinRe mode has been like this since day 1 on WinRe implementation. New features were added (primarily ability to back up over wifi, and no need to download nealy 1 GB of adk files, and better automatic driver handling) but no features were taken away.

That's because the DriverStore is a protected folder owned and managed by the TrustedInstaller. It's essentially a trusted store for driver packages and drivers to reside in which is then hardlinked to the usual Drivers and Inf folders.

As a general aside, please do not delete or touch anything to do with that folder, otherwise you could potentially end up breaking Windows Update, or worse still, causing your system to become unbootable.
