Solved Unable to update BIOS of HP desktop

It is usually 100mb , I make mine 300mb. If the link is correct the bios file is extracted to the esp which seems odd.

It is weird.

Outside of that, I have always made my Recovery partition larger ever since an update wouldn’t install, turned out to be because of the recovery partition.

Goodness! A lot of steps here. I've been chastized previously for running batch files I didn't understand, so I'm reluctant to do this. Also, it's a batch file intended for Win 10 and I'm running Win 11.

Many of the script commands can run using administrative command prompt and administrative powershell.

If time is spent providing them will you run them?

That is generous of you to offer and clever of you to ask. On this issue, instead of me playing I think I'm going to call HP Support. Thanks!

@antspants, here's my disk. I'll try expanding the Recovery partition if it's easy.

It’s using the EPI partition as SIW2 mentions not the recovery.

Easily done with Minitools using a partition next to the C Drive but otherwise, not so much. I’d sooner let someone else help with commands.
I know there were a lot of posts and probably daunting. But worth lookng.
If you’re going to call HP, that’s OK. Maybe a good idea.
But explain the issue as simply as possible and don’t be offering up anything they don’t ask for because the chances are they’ll just be reading from scripts and not actual technicians. They’ll send you to another tier if they need to and the techs will tell you what they need, not you tell them.

If you want to upgrade the BIOS without troubleshooting the event viewer reports then trial and error steps can be posted.

They may have administrative command prompt and administrative powershell commands.

And now... the rest of the story.

Ladies and Germs: I just got off the phone after 110 minutes with HP Support-Mumbai. This is my report.

I selected the 'Call me when you're ready' option and the call came within one minute. Pleasant fellow in Mumbai with lots of noise (other techs) in the background but no trouble understanding. We went online to install their Remote Access software; he gave the PIN and was in like Flynn. He was able to maintain control even after reboots, which I found impressive. He could, of course, not see BIOS screens so for that he sent me a text message with a link enabling him to see whatever I pointed my phone at. I became his assistant for almost two hours. It was great fun! He was pleasantly surprised that I was conversant in Windows-speak and my computer was current and organized.

As @zbook had suggested, I told him about the issue without my own diagnosis or backstory. I needed the BIOS updated from F.22 to F.32 and had not been able to accomplish that after long effort on my part. He replicated receiving the error message I posted at the start of this thread. The issue was as @antspants had divined: the first partition (EFI) was too small. I had purchased this computer with Win 10 even though it had the hardware for 11, because I ran it on 10 for a few months. That apparently is why that partition was made too small. He feels it should be brought up from 100 MB to 500 MB. which I'll have to do if there's another BIOS update. I will use third-party software to accomplish that as there is no open space immediately after the EFI partition.

TBH, he worked too fast for me to follow closely. I remember we had two flash drives in at one point, a novelty for me. I did learn one trick that may be new on this Board... with a flash drive inserted, rebooting while holding Win-B caused the machine to look to the drive for a new BIOS. I don't know if that key pairing just sends the system to look for a flash drive or if it specifically looks for a new BIOS; it's one or the other. I had initially heard 'power on while holding Win-P' which would have required a third hand, but fortunately that was not the case.

After the session, my BIOS had been updated from F.22 to F.32, which was the goal. My experience with HP Support was a good one, and of course I thank everyone here for their help.

Are you having to manually power off the computer or are you having unexpected shutdowns and restarts?

C: drive free space changed: 716.53 > 430.84

The EFI partition size nor free space changed.

BIOS Version/Date AMI F.32, 8/14/2024

FastStartup : Enabled

Windows 11 Pro Build Number : 22631

Consider contacting HP to help you with:

a) Disabling Windows fast startup

b) Deleting the second recovery partition 546 MB

c) Troubleshooting the event viewer hardware events

d) Troubleshooting the event viewer unexpected shutdowns and restarts

Are you having to manually power off the computer or are you having unexpected shutdowns and restarts?

C: drive free space changed: 716.53 > 430.84

The EFI partition size nor free space changed.

BIOS Version/Date AMI F.32, 8/14/2024

FastStartup : Enabled

Thank you for so conscientiously looking through those output files and making suggestions! I adore optimizing my machines, be they my car or my computers.

I am not having unexpected shutdowns, but over the last few days I have been rebooting a lot trying to update the BIOS. C: space changed because I used it to store backup files; that will change as soon as my T7 Shields come in from Amazon. And I've now turned off 'Turbo Mode' which I hope is HP-speak for FastStartup.

Is the second Recovery Partition redundant?

See the tutorial in post #20 step #3.

Is the second Recovery Partition redundant?

Yes.

The enabled recovery partition is partition 4 (840 MB).

The orphaned recovery partition 5 (546 MB) can be deleted.

He feels it should be brought up from 100 MB to 500 MB

Because I'm impatient I increased the size of the EFI partition to 500MB and re-tried the BIOS update. Worked fine this time. :-)

I deleted the second Recovery Partition. After some partition manipulations, lost the first also. Did anyone come up with a way of re-installing a Recovery Partition?

Hi folks,

This is the first non-Reddit search result from Google for this issue, so I figured it is reasonable to post the solution that worked for me here. I have an HP Omen laptop and this should work for both HP desktops and laptops.

The Problem
HP BIOS update fails with error message:
There is not enough free disk space to complete the System BIOS and Device Firmware update operation. Delete some files to free some disk space then try again.
Unfortunately, this may lead many users to believe that they don't have enough space in their drives when they can clearly see they have GBs of free space in their data partitions i.e. the partitions immediately visible to the user. HP's poor wording of the error message is to blame.

The Cause
While the message is not technically incorrect, it is misleadingly vague. It is the EFI partition (usually 100MB) that is lacking space, which is not visible to the user until a disk management/partition tool is used.

Solution #1: Extend the EFI partition (risky, not recommended)
The knee-jerk reaction is to simply extend the EFI partition, but this becomes tricky when the unallocated space is not immediately adjacent to it when the user tries to shrink the C: drive to free more space. This happens to GPT disks where the MSR partition (usually 16MB) frustratingly gets in the way. The process of manipulating these partitions on an existing Windows installation can be convoluted and risky to the average user, so it will not be the focus of this post.

Solution #2: Update BIOS using HP Diagnostics UEFI from USB drive (safer, recommended)
This solution requires 2 USB drives and the assumption the user knows how to find software/drivers for their device from the HP Support website or the HP Support Assistant tool.

In my case, the HP Diagnostics UEFI was already updated to the latest version (10.x.x.x as of this writing), where the Firmware Management option was removed in what I would say was a lapse of judgement by HP. By default, Windows will not allow to override a newer version with an older one.
  1. Do a simple registry edit to spoof the version number into something lower like 7.0.0.0. This tricks Windows to allow the installation to proceed.
  2. Download the 8.2.0.0 version of the diagnostics tool with the Firmware Management option. Install it to the 1st USB drive when asked for the location. This ensures an external copy of the tool is always available that can be booted from directly by pressing F2, regardless of what version is installed on the disk. Keep the USB drive name HP_TOOLS or it won't boot.
  3. Follow the instructions under Update the BIOS manually from a USB flash drive (outside of Windows) - thanks @antspants! This is also the step where the BIOS drive is created on the 2nd USB drive. It is recommended to use the HP Support Assistant to download the correct BIOS for the user's device. Rename the USB drive to HP_BIOS to avoid confusion in the later steps of the guide. The device may need multiple reboots after the update, so be patient.
With this, I was able to update the BIOS of my HP Omen laptop from F.48 to F.50 outside the Windows environment with 2 USB drives, while keeping the latest version of the diagnostics tool installed on the disk (if that is preferred). A bit roundabout, but a lot safer for the average user.

Hope this helps the next soul who lands on this thread. Cheers!
