I noticed on rebooting today that the admin name was changed in the startup screen as well as under Accounts. In computer management I do not have a local user groups with an arrow next to it. How can I correct my admin name to what it was ?

If you logged in with Microsoft Account, it would change your User Name to be your Microsoft Account name
You can change back to a Local Account if you want.

I think I recall setting this machine up as a local account using a gmail address. I was able to use lusrmgr.exe to make the change in the start up screen but it hasn't changed in the upper left portion of the settings / system screen. I always wonder how these changes occur without being prompted.

Your Gmail Address in your account name IS your Microsoft Account, not a Local Account.
A Local Account is just a name you made up, with no Email address attached to the name. Please follow the instructions in Post #2 to change to a local account, if that is what you want.

Thank YOu. With a local account will I need to enter a password when I boot up ? Sorry for such a basic question but I am not at all familiar with this.

A local account is allowed to have a blank password, as mine does. At boot up it should go straight to the desktop, the most it will ever ask you is to click a 'sign in' button if you sign out and back in again, or lock the PC while you're away.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I only have a Microsoft account and as it turns out the name of the account became corrupted for some reason. Took a bit of trial and error but I got it fixed. Thanks for all your replies !

That can happen, so I've heard. One of the reasons I prefer to have local accounts only. To benefit from having a Microsoft account as well I use this 'hybrid account' method.

Very glad to hear that (y)
