Yeah, I find it funny how people rail against stuff they don't even realize they've been using.If you research Microsoft Data Centers, you will be surprised to find that your data is safer in cloud OneDrive than it is in your own home. If your backup strategy is to use multiple concurrent methods, it does negate that trust factor you are feeling.
Anyway, cloud computing/services are here to stay - they aren't going anywhere and those refusing to use it will become dinosaurs

As for backups - I keep one copy offsite, another local external. No need in keeping hundreds in trying to account for every what if in the universe. That'll just drive you batty.
