Yeah, I find it funny how people rail against stuff they don't even realize they've been using.

Anyway, cloud computing/services are here to stay - they aren't going anywhere and those refusing to use it will become dinosaurs

As for backups - I keep one copy offsite, another local external. No need in keeping hundreds in trying to account for every what if in the universe. That'll just drive you batty.

I am very close to your age, and I have been running and building comps since the 1990s on OS as DOS, MS Windows from v3.11 and Red Hat Linux, Debian, Ubuntu and last five years, ArchLinux and its branches Manjaro and EndeavoursOS etc.
I am on Windows only for one reason GAMING.
However, Linux is better and better at gaming in some games, and NVIDIA made open source for DLLSS and RTX.
SteamDeck was born and ran Archlinux, so it looks like that LINUX will take over Windows in gaming in 3 years.
You run all on AMD, so it makes sense to transfer to Linux.

Hi! Welcome to Tenforum. I'm not a big Linux fan but I do have an interest in one distro called Deepin in my VM. Have you heard of it? If there's one that would lure me in, I think that that would be it. I also work with Linux Mint in my VM but rarely. Sorry, I am NOT a Gamer. Never have been and never will be. I have grown kids and grandchildren to occupy my time thank you. Building memories with family is more important to me than games. But I like working with hardware. Building systems is fun for me. So family first and everything else is secondary. If you are close to my "young" age you must have the same values.

Everyone has an egg worth protecting. If your system just died! It wouldn't matter to you?? Of course, it would. Gather your eggs in a basket and protect them. D:?? Is that a partition or a secondary drive?

I wonder how my wife, kids, and grand children feel about that when all together or out on outings. Maybe they're thinking.... dad should be in his room playing Cyberpunk instead of hanging with us

I'm only 71 so I feel young compared to many of you posting here. However, I bought my first computer in 1979. It was a TRS-80 model I. I didn't buy my first PC compatible until 1995. It came with Windows 3.11 WFW and DOS 6.22. I disliked Windows 3.11 so much I replaced it with Windows 95 Beta in April 1995.

Most of my main computers are running Windows 10. Some also have Windows 7 on them.

I upgraded the hardware on my main desktop to support Windows 11. I briefly upgraded it to Windows 11 but rolled it back to Windows 10 because I didn't like it.

My main laptop had Windows 10. It had a lot of hardware and software problems so I bought a new laptop with Windows 11. Now that I was able to use Windows 11 for much longer than the first time I may go back and try Windows 11 on my main desktop again.

My biggest problem with Windows 11 is that they simplied some things too much. Some times it takes a lot of effort to do some things that were easy with Windows 10.

If my system died right now for whatever reason and lets say i had to fresh install from scratch with 0, However long windows takes to reinstall aside, Maybe a half hour for programs etc, Games would take the longest but just a download none the less. Coupla hours tops?.
Never needed an image or that in my 15 years on this side of pc's :)

I think its more that you're post made it sound like you're looking down on those who do, like they have nothing else to do but play childish games and are beneath you. Not saying thats the case...just the post was belittling thats all

If my main machine died right now, I'd get a replacement and restore its image to it. Absolutely nothing to configure or download, it's already all there in the image. Half an hour tops....

In general - yes but if new pc requires IRST drivers but old one did not, this can be tricky.

Even using Macrium Redeploy, I ran into issues with my new laptop, so I created a custom install.wim of old pc, and injected drivers into boot.wim and install.wim, the created custom usb installer.
Only issue I found with this approach is onedrive can prevent creation of custom install.wim, and in the end, I found it was just easier to uninstall onedrive temporarily.

So i'd save an hour or so, No biggie to me :) I dont have anything i can't get back in minutes :)
EDIT: Im still pro backup for other users and would recommend it if i thought it was necessary, I don't because i've never needed or had to and haven't ever been bit even remotely hard enough to need one. The more people who have backups the less problems there is on here so im all for it in general but just not personally. I dont break or touch things i dont know how to fix,. If i needed to backup daily or before any changes to anything i'd be highly considering my ability to use my pc xD

We're not all the same and like to do things differently. Here I'm with @ShamrockRig and prefer to do a fresh clean install on a new machine. I like to know that I'm starting with a new unadulterated registry and that I'll have none of the baggage of my old machine. Since my data will be restored from cloud OneDrive when I log in to Windows, all I need to do is install the apps I use from their websites. For how I use my PC, I can be up and running from a fresh install in well under an hour.

I too always make frequent Macrium images. But I do them for safety to have yet another backup of everything if ever needed.

It usually takes me a couple of days to reinstall all my programs. Some never get reinstalled unless I absolutely need them. For games, all I need to reinstall is the game apps - Steam, EA, and Ubisoft, as the games themselves reside on a separate drive they don't need to be redownloaded.

For me, I just backup my personal data from my user profile and restore once the OS the personal data from it once the OS is reinstalled. Acronis True Image (Cyber Protect) does a great job here. A restore typically takes about 3 minutes if that.

As for "imaging", I only create them if I know I'll be using it right away. I don't keep because they become old rather fast. And I don't always create them, because I'm more likely to clean install when an issue requiring one arises. That's me.

What I used to do after a reinstall [they used to be a required maintenance task every year at least], was keep a copy of the program tree from the start menu.
I would restore this after reloading all my active data, I would then only reinstall applications as I needed them. What this did was reduce the amount of work and time I spent at the time of the refresh, but importantly after a while I had all the applications I actually needed and could prune the start menu of the items I was not using. the same applied to data
of course backups of the running system and data was a given, on a sliding scale dependent on how often things changed

unfortunately the changes to how windows now works and the use of apps which use a different storage regimen the only way to proceed now is the regular backing up of both applications and data with the retirement of unused applications and data being left to a calculated guess

After a clean install, I get my most important programs installed first (Office, photo editing, media player, game apps). After that, install the rest as needed, and that's where the time comes in.
