I'm not too concerned about the upcoming 24H2 version, if the Win11 on the 2 Notebooks fails I'll just put their Win10 HDDs back in and use until that dies.

If Microsoft disabled the empty appraiserres.dll workaround, what if we just corrupt it? If Setup checks for zero size it won't detect our hack, but with a corrupted file it won't be able to check compatibility (I guess). We could find another file about the same size and rename it to appraiserres.dll to replace the original file.

23H2 setup already checks its appraiserres.dll and will fail on a wrong one, or a deleted one. The dummy zero byte one is the only one I can get to work.

But for installing/upgrading to 24H2 there's one workaround that MS cannot disable. That is to use hybrid install media. Remove the install.esd (or install.swm/install2.swm pair) from a 23H2 install usb then replace with the one from 24H2. Then all the currently known workarounds for 23H2 can still be used. :wink:

Thanks @Bree. I trust your opinion on this and appreciate the offer of a solution.
I have come to the conclusion that it's not worth the effort anymore.
I will wait a while and return to Win 10 on the old system when expiration date comes around.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

I'm afraid 23H2 will be the end of the line for your Athlon 64 x2 from 2005/2006. It can't run 24H2, it lacks the PopCnt instruction that AMD first added with the SSE4a instruction set in 2008.

I guess you didn't disconnect from the internet. Since 22H2 replacing the file or other hacks are not enough. You must also stay disconnected from the internet during the upgrade to prevent a hidden online compatibility check that makes the upgrade fail. I confirmed that on more than 5 unsupported computers.

I haven't tried a hybrid Windows 11 version 23H2 and 24H2 install media, but I have a hybrid Windows 10/11 USB. This doesn't work for upgrade because the installer is Windows 10 version. It works only for Legacy BIOS clean installation. The respective UEFI mode hybrid USB fails for UEFI mode installation.

That's mostly what I did, I made the file change on the bootable USB Thumb drive made by MCT but I didn't boot to it, did the Upgrade from within File Explorer running the setup.exe file and while offline. Can't do it from the Mounted .iso file as that is read-only unless one wants to use something like IsoBuster to make the change. Nor using the DVD+R/DL disc.

I never replaced anything, nor did I have to hack anything either.

You disconnect from the internet and mount the ISO. You run Setup and wait the initial count to 100% but don't proceed before you replace the hidden file C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\appraiserres.dll. This is from the Setup temporary files (cache), not in the ISO.

Well that did not work.
That might have worked before but not on 24H2.

Isn't 24H2 still in the Insider Preview? I only use RTM versions now 23H2, got out of IP when Win11 was released.

Yes, I saw and know that as do you but do all visitors understand that the test/beta questions are mixed in with the fully released/RTM questions and many things won't be the same? It can be frustrating for my clients when they see something and don't fully comprehend the differences and it costs more for time.

Curious about 24H2 as I have couple PC using Phenom ii x4 955 CPU, if win 11 will run on them. Seems to say they have POPCNT

I had it on an AMD Phenom II x4 965 CPU on a Gigabyte motherboard for a few weeks, seemed to be okay. I put it back to Win10 all updated then took it out of service so I could use Win10 on a Dell Precision with an XEON CPU. Just to answer curiosity questions, for this type testing I use a Dual Drive Dock not connected to any computer and its hardware cloning feature to create drives I can just connect and boot.
