Afternoon All,

A bit rusty at doing a clean install and unfortunately can't remember what I did the when I installed Win10-Home. I have my USB ready & drivers all lined up to install offline.

  • Preparing to do a clean install of Windows 11 (excellent tutorials as always) from Windows 10 Home - 22H2 - 19045.3996.
  • Solved the missing TMP 2.0 requirement - changed setting on Asus motherboard with help from the Forum.
  • I have two hard drives: SSD & HDD (C & D). See system specs.
  • Recent Microsoft Security update failed [2024-01 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441)]. Supposedly, it's because my Recovery Partition was too small?

Partition Disk 1.png

When I install Windows 11, do I create the partitions at that time? Do I unplug the second drive? Your help would be most appreciated.

I purchased my Windows 10-Home and it's registered to this computer. Will this key work for the upgrade to Windows 11?

Cheers, ms:unsure:

It is not clear what you are trying to do.

1) which drive is the SSD - I am guessing disk 1.
2) do you want to dual boot windows 11 with Windows 10, or just have windows 11?
3) if you want dual boot, where do you want to install Windows 11?

I purchased my Windows 10-Home and it's registered to this computer. Will this key work for the upgrade to Windows 11?
When you installed Windows 10 with your Windows 10 key your PC got a digital licence for Windows Home recorded on the Microsoft activation servers. This digital licence is equally valid for Windows 10 and Windows 11, so you can clean install Windows 11 Home without providing a key (if asked). It will activate from the PC's existing digital licence.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

You mention you want to do a clean install. On a Clean install you boot from the Win 11 installation drive as UEFI, delete all partitions on the drive till you have one and only one unalloacated space and then proceed. Everything on the drive will be deleted.

To upgrade to Win 11 from Win 10 you run Win 11 setup from running Windows 10. Your data and current programs won't be deleted.

What do you want to do: A clean install or a Upgrade?
It is always recommended to detach (SATA or power cable) any other drives

A lot of good suggestions but while we wait for clarification from the graphic you posted the reason, in your case, that kb5034111 failed is because it's obvious your installation of Win10 is very old. The Recovery Partition for your installation is the first partition, which is how Windows initially placed it. Later the installer was modified and placed the Recovery Partition as the last partition.

Also for clarification are you upgrading to Win11 Home or Pro? Assuming Home since you are upgrading from Win10 Home.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
Evening zbook, Cereberus, Wisewiz, Bree, Megahertz, BamalnArk,

Many thanks for all the reminders re: upgrading to Windows 11 - Home (currently running Windows 10-Home License Key).

- A clean install on Windows 11.
- Not running Windows 10 on the second hard drive/dual boot.
- Windows 10 (older version) - updates are turned on from Microsoft since computer was built.
- Everything is backed up on a separate external hard drive including necessary data files.
- Flash Drive (USB) all set to go with Windows 11 (UEFI Boot)
- Drivers all sorted (ready to go offline)
- I will most definitely will unplug all cables not needed (working offline), plus my HDD Drive on D (SATA/Power).

My motherboard could do with an update, but I'm too chicken to flash it!

I'll keep you posted as to what happens tomorrow.

Cheers, ms;-)

Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

As you have a UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.

During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name) to install as UEFI-GPT.
Go to install and hit Load driver. Then delete ALL partitions on the main drive till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.
If you want to use a local account What is "oobe\bypassnro"
