Hi

I have Windows 11 Update and I upgraded the PowerShell from version 5.x to 7.x .

Now, how do I set this latest version as the default?

Technically you have both versions on your machine. 5.x will still be here as powershell.exe and 7.x is there as pwsh.exe. Version 7 is powershell core and it's different from powershell 5.

The problem would be that Windows 11 always runs the version 5.x when I right click on the Start menu and then on the Terminal item.

So, how can I set the system to run the version 7.x when I click on the Terminal item?

Oh, that's easy.

Open terminal, click on the drop down arrow at the top and choose Settings.

Then, for the default profile, set that to PowerShell (Version 7.x ) rather than Windows Powershell (5.x).

I installed the version 7.x via Winget but, then, it didn't ask me if I wanted to keep it updated with Windows Update? How come?

My guess would be that it's the default action. Just like the MSI installer, it installs with Windows update support enabled.

If only the insecure version 5 could be upgraded to 7, but you can only install 7 alongside of 5, I guess for compatibility, but still. :cautious:

Yeah, so much confusion around this. Version 5 is the latest available version of Windows Powershell as they call it. This is windows only and requires the .NET Framework. And if you want to use the ISE, that too requires the Windows only .NET Framework and only works with Powershell 5.x

The version 7 is the newer PowerShell Core (it started with version 6) which can run on Windows, Mac and Linux. This is now just being called Powershell (version 7). The issue right now is having to ensure that older modules that used the Windows only .net Framework are properly handled and supported in Version 7.

Thus for the current timeframe, we have both version 5.x and 7.x
