USB soundcard not working with my headphones

I have a Sony MDR-XB600iP headset. I want to connect it to a USB sound device that I have on my work laptop.

When connected to my computer using the USB device, the speakers work fine, but there is no activity at all from the microphone. If I use a TRRS splitter cable and plug into the speaker/microphone jacks on my PC, the speakers and microphone work very well.

The USB device has the required 3.5mm TRRS jack. I have tried two sets of TRRS earbuds and again speakers are good, but the microphone is very low, but at least working. The hardware ID of the USB device is "USB\VID_001F&PID_0B21&REV_0100&MI_00". This device is a model "CM0018" from JSAUX.

Can anyone suggest why my Sony headset would work very well with the microphone jack on my PC, but is dead silent when plugged into the USB device?

Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on Microphone access and turn it on for the various apps listed there.

Then go to Settings > System > Sound > Input make sure the correct device is selected and then adjust the volume level there.

Checked and all is set properly.

I'm thinking that the type of microphone on my Sony headset isn't compatible and puts out too low of a signal. No idea why it would work so well in the PC jacks.

I'm guessing that it's defective. I've sent it back to Amazon. I'm not sure what I will replace it with.
