This tutorial will show you how to use the Write feature in Notepad to write new content using generative AI in Windows 11.

Notepad is a fast and simple text editor that can be used to view, edit, and search through plain text documents instantly.

Notepad in Windows includes Rewrite, Summarize, and Write—three AI-powered features that help you refine, shorten, and generate text with the assistance of GPT. Whether you want to fine-tune your writing or distill complex information, these AI features help you work more efficiently in Notepad.

Write enables you to draft new content quickly and effortlessly by entering a prompt, with results tailored to your needs. It can start from a blank page or use selected text as a reference, generating relevant content based on your instructions and surrounding context.

Starting with Notepad version 11.2508.28.0 to Windows Insiders in Windows 11, Notepad now supports AI features like Summarize, Write, and Rewrite on Copilot+ PCs, with no subscription required. If you have a subscription, you can seamlessly switch between local and cloud models based on your needs. If you’re not signed in or don’t have a subscription, you can use the local model to accomplish your tasks. For now, these features support English only, making premium AI more accessible and flexible for everyone.

Starting with Notepad version 11.2510.6.0 to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, Microsoft is improving the experience for Write, Rewrite, and Summarize with streaming result responses. Results will start to appear quicker without the need to wait for the full response, providing a preview sooner that you can interact with. Streaming support for Rewrite is limited to results generated locally on Copilot+ PCs at this time. To use Write, Rewrite, and Summarize in Notepad, you will need to sign in with your Microsoft account.

Starting with Notepad version 11.2512.28.0, Copilot AI features have been renamed to Writing tools.

AI features like Write, Rewrite, and Summarize use AI credits from a required Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.

I don’t think I’d pay for credits (or log in with my account) to use generative text, when you can do it for free on the net without a login.

I am sure there will be people that would find this useful.
It goes to show that if something as simple as Notepad is going to have Ai integrated, nothing is safe from Microsofts Ai agenda.
