i changed my user name, but for some reason some places show the new user name while other places show the old user name. any way to fix this?

Which "old places"?

The username is nothing more than text, so for example your userprofile location won't change from the old path.

settings > accounts shows the new user name.

directories, task manager, and a few other places show the old user name.

What exactly did you do? What steps did you take to "change your user name"?

Also, what kind of account are we talking about here? Local account? Online MS account?

It is not a simple matter to change a username. Better to create a new user and then copy files across.

I just said that the option to change username does not exist in Control Panel, as Smoothnobody suggested.

i was replying to the OP. i posted the 3 links that will show you all ways to change your username and display name in all areas. wasnt commenting on your post
side note - looks like that option is not there for you because you use a Microsoft account, not a local account

i'm stuck on step 11. the rename icon is grayed out and not clickable. it's not in the right click menu either.

11 Select the user profile folder (ex: "Brink2"), and click/tap on the Rename icon on the command bar at the top. (see screenshot below)

not sure if related, but for some reason i can't create a new shortcut. when i right click > new the only option is to create a new folder.
