Weird one:

If I create a VHDX via hyper V and boot it from the boot screen all MS store app updates fail and I cannot install anything new from the store. They will download but I get the infamous "something happened our end"

The same install in hyper V updates without issue, any ideas? All WU updates are fine on both

Not sure what is going on there, but it should work. I have done that many times. Maybe machine ID change causes this. (some security stuff in Windows Store to prevent pirating).

Maybe give it some time and it might work later.

I'm running a VHDX as a native boot and have no such problem, as a test I've just installed this from the Store....

These errors do happen from time to time, and usually clear up if you wait and try later. But running from a VHDX doesn't seem to be a contributing factor.

I’ll create another VHDX in a bit and see, it’s dogged me for a couple of weeks but was working fine prior to that. I will say this is a W10 installation on a W11 host install, but as I said it was working fine

Well, my W10 vhdx is still going strong and updating successfully. As you may have noticed in my screenshot above, it was still on the old version of the Store. After updating the Store it just keeps on working. Whatever your problem is, being a vhdx should not of itself stop the Store updating.

I don't get it. It should be an absolute replica of the hyper V image 🤷‍♂️
I'm (virtually) out of ideas now. Dificult to diagnose something I can't replicate.

One last wild guess. If it truly is an exact replica of the Hyper-V VM, then does it still have the same PC name? If so try changing it. Could be having two machines with the same name on your network may be confusing it.....

Yep, same PC name. Checked that as I thought there was a possibility, but yeah it’s a weird one. I’m ruling out network although the hyper v is on the default switch and it switches to using the native Wi-Fi on VHDX as the apps download but don’t install

Has anyone carried out an in place upgrade on a VM? The subject of this thread wasn't bothering me too much but now it's become a bit obsessive.
Hyper V originally created from a Microsoft ISO and then I created the VHDX, everything works as it should apart from the store issue (or so I thought). However neither are seeing defender updates which compounds me to say the least. Anyone else have absolutely any ideas before I just ditch the whole idea of VM's

Has anyone carried out an in place upgrade on a VM?
Don't confuse a VM with a native boot VHDX, the two are not the same thing. The only thing virtual about a native boot is the hard drive.

As I understand it you are asking about an in-place upgrade of Windows 10 on a VHDX native boot system. That is not possible.

To do an in-place upgrade on this .vhdx you would have to attach it as the boot drive for a Hyper-V VM then run the upgrade there.

You can do an upgrade in a VM, but not as a native boot VHDX.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I think I may just ditch it and start over, something isn't right but it should be and for the life of me I can't figure out what

Did you install Windows as fast setup (quick deploy or whatever is called) or did you choose to install OS later and then ran the normal OS setup as you would with a physical DVD or USB-stick?

The quick setup can sometimes cause issues. But I don't think your issues are related to that.

Did you give enough system resources to your VM?
