By mistake I changed my default app for viewing .ico files when I try to change it back the option in not there for Windows photo viewer and I cannot locate it as it is not an .exe file as far as I know. the option is there to open .jpg with it. I think it is a tweak to use the "old photo viewer. there was a program I used to use it was a print picures, a windows app, that would be an ideal viewer for me unless someone can suggest an app that views it larger than paint

IrfanView is free and absolutely amazing. I just let it set itself as the default for all image types.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

If it doesn't appear in default apps for a particular file type, then you can set it as default with a right-click on a file, Open with > Choose another app. Scroll down the list, click 'more apps' and you should find it there. Once you have done this it will also now be available in Default apps.

Good. But remember my tip above, it is quite common for an app (particularly 3rd-party apps) not to appear as an available option in Default apps, but choosing it through 'Open with' seems to register in in Default apps, making it available for later use. I've found this with Irfanview, for example.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

By mistake I changed my default app for viewing .ico files when I try to change it back the option in not there for Windows photo viewer and I cannot locate it as it is not an .exe file as far as I know. the option is there to open .jpg with it. I think it is a tweak to use the "old photo viewer. there was a program I used to use it was a print picures, a windows app, that would be an ideal viewer for me unless someone can suggest an app that views it larger than paint

For viewing and edit .ico files i use Green Fish Editor Pro. I think is the best.

@Ghot I must say XnView is the best for viewing the contents of a folder of icons (.ico) I have come across. It's not to bad for .tga's as well if you view them in the folder but not so good as an "open with" program

You're right. It's much better for dealing with folders full of pics of any kind.
If you want to, you can set it as the default image viewer. Then just double clicking on an image will do the trick.


It'll definitely work as an Open with... program...

@Ghot I agree, I use it for "open with" .tga files and then they appear far too small but I can roll the mouse wheel and get them the size I want. when I open XnView and browse a folder it is great. I have now got rid of GIMP (far too cluttered and complicated for my needs) I am still in the process of setting up the options, thanks for the tips.

I left most of the Options at defaults. I did set the thumbnail size to 92x69.
For my eyesight and the sheer amount of pics I have... that seemed the best for me.

I changed mine to make it bigger, I use it mainly for .tga icons and open folders of icons to view them

I don't think there is.

But to view icl (icon library), I use a program called Librarian.
