VM's missing in Hyper-V Manager Windows 11

Greetings all:

Does anyone know what process or services controls the listing of VM's in Hyper-V Manager under Windows 11? Every so often at least under 22000.346, it seems like Hyper-V Manager which was working fine when closed and reopened again does not show the VM's listing and the only way I have figured out to fix it is to restart the system.

22000.346 is an insider preview build, the current release build is 22000.318. I have no such issues in .318.

When you open Hyper-V manager and it's empty, does it show the name of your PC in the left hand pane? If it does, click on it. If you still don't see the VMs or you don't see your PC's name, click on the name Hyper-V Manager in the left pane, then select Action > Connect to Server... on the menu bar, then choose Local server. See it that brings back the list. If that works then it seems that it's sometimes failing to connect to the server on opening Hyper-V Manager for some reason, maybe a bug or maybe something odd in your set up..

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

I can't tell if the problem happens in .318 or not because normally I don't keep Hyper-V running from bootup and only when I read that the Windows 11 Development Channel has a update. Yes, it will always show the name of the PC as that's the VM host. It's just not showing the only VM client I have when the problem happens. I have really had it happened only in 2 sessions, with the first session, I was able to restart or start one of the services that has Hyper-V in it and it made the VM showed up again but yesterday, no such luck. I'll give what you mentioned a try should it happen again and also get screenshots so it's easier to explain but from what I remembered, this is what it looked like, I've edited the screenshot to show what it looks like:

When the problem happens, the Virtual Machines is not showing up.

I also had this behavior when after short period of time (days or not even) Hyper-V breaks beyond repair. Never had this issue happen on 1904x builds, but for me its 100% reproducible since couple insider builds before 11, and still present in the latest 22000 build and insider dev channel.
HV manager can't connect, VMMS is running, takes long time to shut down and can't be started back.
