VMware Workstation 17.5.2: Win10/11 guests very slow after update from 16.2.5 on Intel 8th Gen machine?

As title says. I've had a very good performance on 16.2.5, but after upgrading to 17.5.2 all my Windows 10 and 11 guests are very slow. I've tried running VMware as admin, disabling its process' power throttling from command prompt. All settings are OK, VMware Tools got upgraded automatically, I upgraded the hardware compatibility in VM settings to 17.5.2, but nothing makes any difference. The VMs run very slow.

I know that Intel 12+ Gen CPUs have had this problem because of efficiency cores, but this is on the 8th gen Intel CPU.

What could be the problem??

I just reverted back to Workstation 16.2.5 (after reverting the hardware compatibility of VMs to 16.2.5) and the speed is back to normal, almost as fast as the host.

I'm running few VM on VMware 17.5.2 have no problem is it all your VM are slow?

Disable Side channel mitigation, see that will help.

I'm having the same issue - same 8th-gen Core i7 processor. I was at VMWare Workstation Pro 17.6 then upgraded to 17.6.1, and the problem still persists. My Windows 10 VMs work just great, but Windows 11 is so slow it's unusable. Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you got Hyper-V enabled (even if not installed)?

Well that is possibly the root of your issue. Vmware does not play well with the Hyper-V type 1 hypervisor (vmare being type 2).

A few years back, you had to turn the hypervisor off. However new Hyper-V apis were developed that allowed vmware to coexist with the Hyper-V hypervisor but they gave a significant performance reduction.

It refers to virtualbox but equally applies to vmware (and windows 10/11).

I have done tests with the type 1 hypervisor on or off and it made a big impact on vmware performance.

Of course, I cannot guarantee this will solve your problem but it would be my first thing to try.

Note: if your Windows guests are Pro or better (i.e. not Home), then frankly for most cases Hyper-V is far superior to VMware in general performance.

Hyper-V is not as intuitive as vmware/virtualbox but after a bit of a learning curve I (and many forum members) prefer Hyper-V.

One major plus of Hyper-V is that its vhdx files can also be native booted (providing vhdx has suitable host drivers).

Turned off Hyper-V on my host (laptop) and it made no difference. Any other suggestions?

I got around the issue with a workaround that works perfectly for me: I quit trying to use VMWare Workstation Pro for Windows 11 hosts. I used Hyper-V (since it IS free) and it works like a champ. And I no longer care why VMWare Workstation didn't work. I just needed to create a couple of local Windows 11 guests that I can use for contract work, and I've now done that and they run great. I still have ESXi on my server for my big VMs, but HyperV is perfect for me for this particular case.

Are you sure - I have never seen virtualbox outperform hyper-V with Windows guests. I never use Windows Home guests on Hyper-V though as you cannot get sound as Home does not have RDP server ability.

I am sure. If your ram capacity is higher than 4GB you'll be fine using Virtualbox.

Neither have I.
I use VMWare now though for the same reasons mentioned, especially the lack of audio in Linux/GNU.

Have you actually used Hyper-V. On all tests I have done with passmark, it far out performs virtualbox for general windows guests, as it is a type1 hypervisor, not type 2?

I would never run a vm unless host has at least 8GB, and preferably 16 GB or more.
Guests can cope with 4GB Ram but better 6-8 GB minimum.

You can get sound in Linux for some distros (Ubuntu, Kali) but getting sound to sync with audio on videos is a challenge.

Been there and done that.
But using Arch & Debian at the moment, so much simpler with Workstation Pro, especially now that it's free.
