I agree about the broadcomm site -- gives the phrase "user agression" a whole new meaning !!!.

I'd recommend though if using a LINUX HOST system don't bother with vmware workstation or oracle's Virtual box -- use Linux's own FREE virtualisation software KVM/QEMU -- very fast as it's a Type 1 Hypervisor (like HYPER-V on WINDOWS HOST systems) but a lot more flexible in being able to add any type of external hardware - not just USB drives / cdroms plus dynamic redirection of both usb devices and pci devices makes the whole thing far more flexible.

Don't forget though if using Windows as a VM on HOST Linux systems using KVM/QEMU (whatever the Linux distro) download and install the Fedora Virtio Windows drivers from the fedora site and install them ON THE GUEST !!!. It's an Iso with choice of msi or exe installer.The package works like vmware tools / virtual box additions with those virtualisation programs and optimises disks, screen display resolutions, mouse etc etc.

Note also Linux being Multi-user you can log off the system with a VM still running accessible to permitted users. On Windows the VM program runs under a users own "address space" so when you logoff the VM isn't accessible.

Note unless you are running a Windows SERVER VM then only a single user can access the Windows VM which is normal for non server versions of Windows of course - and remember that running concurrent Windows VM's (including Windows Server versions) with the same license key / activation key isn't permitted under the EULA.

Does that support copy and paste and other features like vmware tools? Just curious. How is GPU acceleration? Biggest issue I always see is that its too slow in most virtual machine platforms. I use vmware as its very fast in gpu tasks.

It's a type 1 Hypervisor so very fast -- cut and paste is fine so is USB dynamic re-direct (you can attach / detach usb devices dynamically - you don't have to have them all enabled at VM boot) and if you enable iommax (or equiv) then pass thru of actual hardware is great too - including GPU if you have two. For equiv of vmware tools download the virtio tools from the fedora site and install on the WINDOWS GUEST. The virtio tools can be used for Windows GUESTS on any Linux distro running KVM/QEMU. Read the documentation as you will need to add yourself to a couple of groups so you can run the Virtual machine manager GUI as a normal (i.e nor admin) user.

Note also the KVM/QEMU runs VM's as a service -- so you can logoff and still have VM's accessible to other users. With VMWare when you logoff the VM is also shut down as it runs under your user workspace,

It's not a case of bothering to sign in. Broadcom doesn't allow non-business email addresses to download anything and hasn't for at least a year. Sure the Download Page will show the downloads, but you don't be able to actually download the files.

Your statement is never too far from the truth.
I had no problem downloading it and I am sure not a business.

Right-o. The only change I saw was the change to how logins work in the portal, earlier this year.

lets me sign in and use it download it etc. I just do it via other ways so I dont have to bother with that mess.

Apparently it's free for commercial use now? I knew it was free for education and personal use when they updated it.

VMware Workstation Pro is now free for commercial, educational, and personal use. You no longer require a license key.

How old is your Broadcom account and what is the domain of your email address?

The downloads icon and ability to check to agree to the terms and conditions on the download page is disabled for my account and has been for at least since the fall of 2024. Hence, I cannot download anything from the download pages. My account has never been verified, and apparently was denied verification without any notice.

See Register for an account on the Broadcom Support Portal and Communities and most importantly Error: "Account verification is pending. Please try after some time." when downloading files

VMware Workstation Pro 26H1 Release

Broadcom has released a new update for VMware Workstation Pro, popular virtualization software for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Version 26H1 is now available for download from the Broadcom Support Portal.

Main changes in the release include 64-bit binaries and components for Windows hosts, timestamps for virtual machines to make them easier to identify in the list, support for remote connections to ARM-based ESX hosts, and updated credential formats for easier identification of encrypted VMs.

VMware Workstation Pro also adds support for the following operating systems:


Broadcom also fixed security patches and a fix for incorrect links to technical documentations. Now, all help buttons and URLs across the app link to the correct articles instead of the documentation home page.

According to the release notes, the update has one known issue:

After upgrading VMware Workstation Pro on Windows hosts, ISO files remain in previous installation directory
When upgrading VMware Workstation on Windows from an earlier version, if the new installation path is different from the old one, ISO image files from the earlier installation are not automatically removed. These files remain in the old installation directory, for example, C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\windows.iso and continue to consume disk space.
Workaround: Perform one of the following tasks:

• Before upgrading, manually uninstall the earlier version of VMware Workstation and select the option to save product configuration.
• After upgrading, manually navigate to the old installation directory and delete the ISO image files and their containing folders.

While VMware Workstation Pro is available for free for non-commercial use, getting to the latest version is quite a challenge. You cannot update an existing installation, as Broadcom forces users to download installers from the Broadcom Support Portal, which requires creating an account.
