All new hardware on a new build. Just a simple question on the "system" speaker. The new motherboard show a speaker connected to Pin #1 [+5 V] and the other wire to pin #4 [speaker] Strange to me?? Seen before Speaker and Ground.

If you google "pc speaker 4 pin diagram" and click on images you will see tons of pin diagrams that are the same as yours.

    Fast!
Computer cases used to come with a system PC speaker, but these days, they don't.
But I always like to add one to my motherboards.

This is what I use on my builds.

Asus B550. [Confession] I sort of hoard PC parts that I think might be useful. Will be using an old xp 4 pin speaker. This confirms my reason for hoarding??:scream: Tx to all

As long as you can recognize that you're hoarding, I do believe it is not a serious problem. :lmao:

I'm up to four boxes in the basement full of old parts going back to 486 days - parts I seriously, seriously doubt I can / will ever use - but they are still there nonetheless. :look:

Me too, reused an old motherboard speaker on my latest build, found a box stuffed full of old floppy, IDE and Scsi cables the other day, got a collection of CPUs going back to the 8086 and a ton of useless assorted ram sticks and a few ancient GPUs and IDE drives and that's after having a clear out a few weeks ago.

Same. I got so much hoarded stuff, I could probably start a computer store. :)

This is the earliest I still have, that's together, and still works.
Pentium Pro, 96 MB of RAM (6x16MB), and a vid card with a whopping 4KB of VRAM.
1.2 and 2.1 GB IDE HDDs.
I put Windows XP on the big drive and Diablo II on the small drive.
I could join the online channel in Diablo II (battle.net), and join a game.
But once in the game I couldn't... move.
I think the problem was the 3Com NIC. :D

The current speaker that produce beep sound is likely different from old mobo speaker. It is now actually not really a speaker, it's a kind of piezolectric device (a tiny metal plate) that produce sound itself as the mobo only send signals (not sound) this piezoelectric buzzer need trigger and some sort of power (5+)

That is my guess.

I saw them referenced by a previous post. Can you confirm the old type speaker would still work.? I am just hoping that connecting an old one to 5V will not let all the smoke out! o_O

Technically yes.
Motherboard beep sound is a short discharge of a 5 volt signal in non-sinusoidal waveform (mostly square waves). Mostly an old small speaker can handle the signal.
You just need to match the red cable with 5 volt and black with negative pin (still works if inverted anyway). Make sure you don't short those two pin in anyway. Old speaker is physically bigger than a buzzer, so you need to make it sit in a certain way that isn't in touch with any other board components.

I have an PC that has piezoelectric beep speaker that works (not used by Windows and any POST screen) but it works on the built-in troubleshooter on my Dell.

I have an Linux ISO and if I pressed any key during startup, it beeps on the PC speaker.

The PC Speaker is only on boot process and if you want to ease your troubleshooting, you may want it

Beep Codes may vary on your motherboard manufacturer.

Both the computers in your specs, would use the new speaker, like the one I linked up above.
Those ones that look like a 2" diameter speaker, are way older than your computers.
Only use the new teeny ones.

Some trivia:
There used to be a driver for W 3.1 that enabled all sounds (music, games) to be played thru MB speaker.
First sound for PC (IBM compatibles) was generated thru Keyboard control chip. That predates Sound Blaster.
