W11 in place upgrade error

Hello, I'm having issues with in place upgrade from W10 to W11 on a DELL Optiplex desktop, it is unsupported hardware but I used scripts to by pass it, however the install is always crashing right away on 0%. I have tried DISM and sfc scan, reseting WU folders as well but to no avail.

WindowsUpdateBox.exe is crashing with ACCESS_VIOLATION on unbcl.dll, I have dmp file but I'm not really sure how to read debug it properly. Errors for CSIDL_PRINTHOOD seem to be the culprit but I did check registry for Printhood folders and it all semeed fine to me. I was also wondering what is this all "CMonitoredPath::AddOverride" stuff, these paths don't exist on this PC.

I'd really apprieciete the help

So it has SSE4.2, are you trying to bypass TPM2.0, what do the scripts do?
I’m currently in my phone, I can’t read any files ATM


You could create the install media using RUFUS then run the setup exe from the USB in windows file explorer? For the in-place.

Or did you try that?

Sorry, I didn't have time earlier to be more specific. I have successfully bypassed the hardware requirements and the install process itself starts fine without issues, it does however crash instantly on the blue fullscreen window at 0%. To bypass hardware requirements I used scripts on this forum and Rufus on USB as well, but results are always the same so I think the issue is somewhere else.

The installation methods I tried:
1. Rufus USB > setup.exe
2. Rufus USB > winPE
3. Downloaded ISO > setup.exe
4. Used script by @Win0x (How to Bypass Windows 11 System Requirements in One Command) to use Windows Update, it did download it but failed on installation.

Few other pointers:
1. This is a domain workstation
2. I have other same optiplexes and they are also failing the upgrade with pretty much the same errors - this makes me think it's driver issue?
3. We used profwiz about 2 years ago to migrate to domain - this makes me think something with user profiles went wrong during migration and now we're seeing the issue.

Setup fails with: " FatalError [0x090001] PANTHR Exception (code 0xC0000005: ACCESS_VIOLATION) occurred at 0x00007FFE73803330 in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\unbcl.dll " and right before this I see errors: Failure while getting the known folder path for CSIDL_PRINTHOOD > class UnBCL::String *__cdecl Mig::CFacadeUser::GetKnownFolderLocation(class UnBCL::String *,int *,class UnBCL::String **)

Normally I dont think CSIDL_PRINTHOOD would be the issue but it both refers unbcl.dll, so maybe?

Can you do an in place upgrade from Windows 10 to windows 11? I've never seen that you could do that and that might be his problem.

The logs show failures points to missing or incorrect registry entries related to known folders. Since the same issue occurs on identical domain joined machines, the most likely cause is an improper migration of user profiles. Profwiz tool may have failed to correctly map profile folders.
You should check the registry paths under HKEY_USERS<SID>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and User Shell Folders to see if the "PrintHood" key is missing or incorrect. You might also verify that the corresponding folder exists on disk, and if it doesn’t, consider creating it manually or cleaning up any orphaned or unused profiles from the registry.

Yes, you can! I’ve successfully done so on dozens of machines.

Yeah, everything looks fine. Kinda feels like it could be something with the domain or group policies, folder permissions, or redirections. Hard to say for sure. Logs show repeated 0x800703ee errors when trying to load resources, and the CSIDL_PRINTHOOD issue keeps popping up. Normally, Printhood wouldn’t be a big deal, but combined with the unbcl.dll crash (access_violation), I think there could be something off with profile handling or migration. Maybe folder redirections, missing paths, or something GPO-related messing with known folders?

Might be worth also checking if Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup services are running properly (you can find them in Services). Also, running classic sfc /scannow.
