I have spent the past few hours trying to install W11 on a unsupported W10 PC.
Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4291)

The workaround given on the MS site has been followed, except the English version on my PC is GB English.
This version was not available on the language choice prior to downloading the ISO, so I selected International English for the download.

The attached image shows my edit of the registry for this purpose.

I have used Rufus to mount the ISO in a folder on my desktop.

Windows is still giving me the error message about the need for secure boot and TPM.

It then stops the process.

Ticking the appropriate boxes in Rufus does not solve the problem.

Any suggestions ?

Install the Aveyo bypass, download the iso. and do the upgrade from within Windows!

I upgraded a 10 year old non-complaint PC last week as follows:

  1. Download the latest Windows 11 ISO file and mount it as a virtual drive
  2. Turn off net access
  3. Run setup.exe
  4. On the first screen click 'Change how Setup downloads updates' and select 'Not right now'.
  5. Replace C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll with an empty dummy file. Use Notepad to make a new text document renaming it as appraiserres.dll. You can now continue the install and it will skip the compatibility checks.

That's alright.
International English = GB English
[These days, English = US English]

Upgrade to Windows 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
And you'll need to create a dummy appraiserres.dll file as explained in some posts above.

You don't even need to do those workarounds --from the iso image (get from UUPDUMP etc) and simply run dism /ApplyImage .... etc then run the bootloader bcdboot.exe to the EFI partition on your target disk. Rufus also might still work.

This method also works if you use physical vhdx files too.

Note these methods mean you have to install from new -- not upgrade an existing build.

Aother get_around -- especially if you want to UPDATE an existing build via Windows update is to have a version in a VM -- the VM hardware can run on almost any real hardware - you can emulate TPM's, alter cpu topography etc -- update the build and then copy to a real system - windows can update the required physical drivers -- easier though if you copy those to a separate file from an existing real machine and after booting the "cloned VM" update the drivers from the saved file.

And did you check Secure Boot and TPM? It should work, at least till 24H2.

I think even 10 year old computers had secure boot available so I'm not sure if that's a real issue. If the computer is only MBR / BIOS with no UEFI support / boot then Rufus might be the only answer as I'm not sure if bcdboot.exe would install to the disk with the /MBR parameter without an error.

Might be interesting to test on an old Sony VAIO laptop I've got around somewhere -- that's only MBR boot.

It worked for Windows 10 - but Windows 11 -- ????

Cheers

Load the system hive of the installation media \sources\boot.wim image 2

make the reg changes and unload the hive.

One easy way is to use 7-zip to insert the .cmd file that will do it on the fly

The installation media has to be writeable.

Extract iso contents to usb stick will be fine as it will be writeable.
************************************************************************

The long way is mount boot.wim image 2

1. create an empy folder to mount the wim image

md %systemdrive%\mountfolder

2. mount the bootable wim image into that folder ( in ms install media boot.wim image 2 is the bootable image by default )

if the usb stick is E:

DISM /Mount-image /imagefile:E:\sources\boot.wim 2 /MountDir:%systemdrive%\mountfolder

3. In regedit or some 3d party reg editor, load the hive %systemdrive%\mountfolder\windows\system32\config\system

or use reg.exe

reg load HKLM\SOMENAME %systemdrive%\mountfolder\windows\system32\config\system

4. make the reg changes

reg add "HKLM\SOMENAME\Setup\LabConfig" /f /v "BypassTPMCheck" /t REG_DWORD /d 1
reg add "HKLM\SOMENAME\Setup\LabConfig" /f /v "BypassSecureBootCheck" /t REG_DWORD /d 1
reg add "HKLM\SOMENAME\Setup\LabConfig" /f /v "BypassRAMCheck" /t REG_DWORD /d 1
reg add "HKLM\SOMENAME\Setup\LabConfig" /f /v "BypassStorageCheck" /t REG_DWORD /d 1
reg add "HKLM\SOMENAME\Setup\LabConfig" /f /v "BypassCPUCheck" /t REG_DWORD /d 1

5. unload the hive

reg unload HKLM\SOMENAME

6. commit the changes and unmount the wim image

Dism /Unmount-Image /MountDir:%systemdrive%\mountfolder /Commit

Those of us who have a strange obsession with pe building do this mounting and loading stuff all the time. It is probably incomprehensible to the average punter.

The 7-zip method linked in my previous post is a lot easier and quicker for most people.

As simple as it gets: Download latest Windows 11 ISO (currently version 23H2, 24H2 coming this October or November) from Microsoft official website: Download Windows 11
If you scroll down the third option is to download the ISO directly without using any tool. Just make sure you download the same language (English International aka English UK) to match Windows 10, or you won't be able to upgrade. Now use Rufus to create a USB flash drive: Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way
When you click to start creating the USB, Rufus will detect it is a Windows 11 ISO and prompt to bypass compatibility check. Check all the boxes and proceed. After the USB flash drive is complete, it is patched to bypass compatibility check. First disconnect from the internet to avoid a hidden online compatibility check that causes the upgrade to fail. Then run Setup from the USB and proceed with the upgrade. Stay disconnected from the internet until the upgrade is complete and you see the Windows 11 desktop. You can check version in Setting, System, Info.

A little more advanced alternative is to mount the ISO directly (Open with File Explorer) rather than create a USB with Rufus. Disconnect from the internet and run Setup from the virtual DVD drive that opens but don't proceed any further, you must bypass compatibility check first. To do that make sure you can see hidden files and all file extensions (configured in File Explorer settings). Right-click on the desktop and create a new text file. With extensions visible it should end in .txt Rename it to appraiserres.dll without the .txt at the end. Now you have a dummy file to replace the one that checks compatibility. Copy the dummy file and open the hidden folder $Windows in the Windows drive (C:). This is the Setup cache (temporary data). Now open the subfolder sources and paste the dummy file. Reply Yes to replace the original file. Now Setup cannot check compatibility and you can proceed with the upgrade. Stay disconnected from the internet until complete.
