OK I couldn't think where to ask this - but as it's based on W10 + W11 I'm wondering if anybody has tried the evaluation (180 days free) either as a VM or on an actual machine. The last version was really limited - no activation so you couldn't "personalize" it and simple things like openssh server couldn't install ( a server that couldn't serve !! -- you couldn't make that up). Hopefully this release is a bit better.

Cheers

Hi folks

This build works perfectly unlike the rubbish of the ist build !!-- mega fast too -- and one finally can install things like OPENSSH-SERVER on it (from add optional features) and personalize e.g themes etc). Even old W7 classic games (Hearts, spider solitaire etc) run on it.

What I can't understand is why this Server intended for businesses and an LTS solution doesn't require secure boot , a whole host of restrictive CPU's or TPM whereas a Consumer grade OS like W11 has far more restrictions (at least in theory in place).

Can somebody PLEEEEEEASE try and enlighten me as to why way a commercial server intended for businesses has less hardware restrictions than a domestic OS which a lot of people can get "for Free".

BTW on a VM with 2 vCPU's and only 2GB assigned RAM (default when installing) it's brilliantly fast !!! -- I'm fiddling around with it to make it into a "Desktop Workstation" -- I'll get 180 days of use out of it. The only thing that won't work on it is Macrium -- (need a server version) but the stand alone free version from W11 / W10 works perfectly for backup etc ).

Very impressed with that build !!! -- I'll probably be able to get an official license from workplace later but just testing the free evaluation -- Ms have got something right these days --am using Standard edition with Desktop experience.

I did create the VM with emulated TPM and secure boot but that's not necessary (AFAIK).

Screenshot_20210920_162428.png

Good one Ms !!!!!

Now creating a WintoGo version !! To which I'll add HYPER-V to see if I can create a W11 VM on it.

Cheers

Security on servers is less obvious, they are handled by professionals mostly so do not have the potential ingress points for bad code that is found with home level users, and a lot of workers in business unfortunately, the servers will be likely to have all the security that is being made mandatory on Windows 11 unless they are fitted with even better security systems

Hi there
Interesting point -- however it's interesting that at least the OS is "Installable" whereas W11 for some isn't !!!.

I know for corporates etc security is really important but for home users is there a real need to change from W10 requirements to W11 -- TPM has been around for quite a while -- why only just now is it being thrust down the neck of consumer users. WD is one of the most robust security systems around these days - especially for domestic users and is updated almost daily.

You need to consider where the component systems for international botnets Etc. come from.

By forcing the huge numbers of users with unsecure windows devices, and no knowledge of the threats or the cures, the requirements of secure windows 11 installs will over time, improve security for all of us who do know what is required

Hi there
I'm enjoying this debate - but things like international botnets and mega security problems on domestic "Mom and pop" type computers aren't really a serious proposition -- surely. What N.Korean hacker is going to worry about getting 3 EUR from some old consumer grade computer when the same person can crash the whole of the UK's NHS system or France's Nuclear sub activation codes!!

Of course OS security should always be improved but there are ways and means and doing it too quickly especially if made in a seemingly arbítrary manner will just make many (probably most) people to just ignore !!.

Cheers

Botnets are used to enable distributed computing, this gives the users of the botnets the ability to attack, lots of secure devices and systems

The members of the botnet are just components. They are are normally completely unaware of the fact that part of their computer resources are being used by others.

Hi there
But all the internet connections go through ISP's -- that's who should be looking at this stuff !!! Even VPN's and TOR are no good without an initial connection to the Internet in the first place (unless you are mega rich and have your own Internet Infrastructure in place !!!).

Anyway -- Off to pub for nice celebration Drink and meal. Thanks for interesting discussion which I'm sure has a lot more "legs" in it.

Cheers

Hardware security devices and their software control is the joint responsibility of the hardware and OS software makers, and that's who's involved here,. anyway most of the ISP's when it comes to security, couldn't grab their own butt with both hands :lmao:
