Hello,

I would like to add thunderbolt 3 to my Dell XPS 8960 PC but my motherboard does not support thunderbolt. Besides updating my motherboard what are my options, if any?

An option I've used in the past to gain USB 3 support on older computers running Win8 or later was a PCIe Add-in card with the desired ports. Might be a long shot if wanting for the older PCI slot. Maybe a Search through Amazon or NewEgg will find one?

Would like to add thunderbolt 3 port to my machine

Hello, I would like to add a thunderbolt 3 port to my Dell XPS 8690 machine. It is running with Windows 11 pro. Is it as simple as adding a thunderbolt 3 PCIe card? Thanks in advance Stu

I'm not sure that the answer has changed over the past 12 days. It's not something that I can personally respond to. The XPS 8960 seems to have no Thunderbolt header, which makes me doubt that it could accept an accessory card.

One thing: the Dell uses a proprietary motherboard. Swapping in an industry standard board will not be practical.

Can't speak further about Thunderbolt but I've used PCIe cards in a PCIe slot on the motherboard without any USB 3 functions to gain that access.

If your MB does not have built-in support for USB 4 / Thunderbolt version x, then it cannot be added on to the system. Both require a specific header to be available on the MB. The best that you can hope to accomplish is USB 3.1 Gen 2. However, that said, USB 3.1 Gen 2 will still get you some serious speed for drive access.

Maybe you'd get more comprehensive advice if you could explain why you wish to add a Thunderbolt 3 port.

I'm unfamiliar with Thunderbolt, but I'm pessimistic if you want it for a graphics interface.
